The Seventh Beatitude

This section introduces and quotes the seventh beatitude: 'Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.'

Question 57. What is the seventh beatitude? Answer. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Matt. 5:9).

The Work of Peacemakers

This section explains the three ways individuals can be peacemakers: through intercessory prayer for those at enmity with God, by mediating disputes between people, and by advising rulers to prevent war.

Question 58. What does this beatitude teach? Answer. First, that those people attain this beatitude who daily offer the bloodless Sacrifice to God for those who are at enmity with God, persevering in prayers and fastings, and, appeasing His righteous anger, acquire His grace for sinners. Second, those who, through their prudent and fitting mediation, eliminate mutual disagreements and disputes among people and bind them together with love, turning enemies into friends. Third, those who, with their counsel, remove the causes of war among Kings and Rulers to prevent bloodshed and murder.
