The Ninth Beatitude
This pericope introduces and quotes the ninth beatitude from Matthew 5:11-12, which speaks of rejoicing when persecuted for righteousness' sake.
Question 61. What is the ninth beatitude? Answer. “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because your reward in heaven is great.” (Matthew 5:11–12)
Who Enjoys This Blessing?
This section explains that the ninth beatitude applies to Apostles, Martyrs, and all who are persecuted for the Orthodox Catholic Faith, enduring accusations, suffering, and even death.
Question 62. What does this blessedness entail? Answer. The Apostles, Martyrs, and all who are persecuted for the Orthodox Catholic Faith enjoy this blessedness: they endure accusations, torments, loss of property, honor, and income, exile from their homeland, and finally, they suffer violent death, shedding their blood.
Understanding the Deeds for Blessing
This pericope clarifies that the good deeds associated with this blessing are interconnected, and those who perform them, even while suffering persecution, will receive a hundredfold in this life and eternal life.
Question 63. What kind of actions should we understand Christ to be promising blessedness for? Answer. First, these good works are so interconnected that whoever possesses one virtue, in its proper and true sense, possesses all the others; likewise, whoever has not acquired any virtue at all is deprived of all the others. Second, one should think of good works in such a way that their doers will not only enjoy eternal blessedness in heaven, but they are also blessed in this world, enjoying temporal goods by God's favor, according to Christ's words: “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my name’s sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.” (Matt. 19:29). And in another place: “No one who has left a house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake and for the gospel’s sake will fail to receive a hundred times as much, now in this age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, in persecution, and in the age to come eternal life.” (Mark 10:29–30).
