The Closing of the Lord's Prayer
This section introduces and defines the third part of the Lord's Prayer: 'For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.'
Question 26. What is the third part of this Lord's Prayer? Answer. This is the conclusion: that Your kingdom, and power, and glory are forever. Amen.
Meaning of the Doxology and Amen
The closing consists of two parts: the first echoes the introduction, assuring us that our prayers will be answered because God's kingdom, power, and glory are eternal; the second part, 'Amen,' signifies our request for all to be fulfilled according to His will.
Question 27. What is contained in this conclusion? Answer. This conclusion has two parts: the first corresponds to the introduction; for just as the introduction assures us that we will receive from God what we properly ask of Him, for we ask our Father; so the conclusion teaches us that we will receive all that we have asked for: because this world belongs to our Father, He reigns over it, and all creation obeys Him; His is the power and glory, which nothing can resist either in heaven or on earth: therefore He is able to do all that we ask of Him with faith and hope, and all this for no other reason than for the eternal glory of His holy name, which is contained in these words of this part: 'and glory forever.' The second part of the conclusion is contained in the word 'amen.' By this, we ask that everything be fulfilled as we have prayed, because we have prayed with faith and hope according to His will. For the Apostle says: 'And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him' (1 John 5:14–15).
Connection to the Lord's Prayer
The closing is integral to the Lord's Prayer, as Christ Himself concluded it with these words, and its inclusion enhances the prayer's power and validity, with the Church directing its use in public and private worship.
Question 28. Does this conclusion connect with the Lord's Prayer? Answer. Jesus Christ himself, when finishing the prayer He taught us, spoke these words, as seen in the Gospel of Matthew (Matt. 6:13). Furthermore, the very meaning of the words shows that they are in no way contrary to the Lord's Prayer. Indeed, the prayer itself gains greater power from them, since we ask Him whose power is revealed throughout the world and to whom all creation is obedient. Although laypeople don't say these words, nothing prevents them from doing so. To give this prayer greater weight, the priest says these words during public services, and also during private ones if he is present. If the priest is absent, a layperson won't be wrong to say them during private prayer, just like other words from the Gospel. Therefore, these words should never be separated from the Lord's Prayer. For by the simplest reasoning, it can be seen that during public prayers, the priest says these words only for greater significance, as the Church has commanded.
