And I saw a great fire, a black flame, filled with many worms, in which the souls of those were trapped who, while living in the world, had set aside heavenly things and had seized upon earthly cares with all their might, and in it they were tossed from place to place like leaves in the wind. Because they had neglected God in the darkness of disbelief, while they were fixated on earthly things, they felt this black fire; and since they had a greedy hardness in the same concern, they were tormented by the aforementioned worms; and because they had ceased from it, they were tossed about in that same fire, here and there, with affliction. And I saw and understood these things. I heard a voice saying to me, "These words are not meant to be spoken in vain, nor should they be thought of lightly."

Et vidi ignem magnum, nigram flammam habentem, ac plurimis vermibus redundantem, in quo etiam animae illorum erant, qui in saeculo viventes, coelestia postposuerant, et omni annisu curam terrenorum arripuerant, et in eo de loco ad locum velut a vento projiciebantur.
Quia enim in tenebrositate incredulitatis Deum neglexerant, cum terrenis inhiabant, ignem hunc nigrum sentiebant; et quia avaram duritiam in eadem cura habuerant, a praefatis vermibus torquebantur; et quoniam ab ea cessaverant, in eodem igne hac et illac cum afflictione jactabantur.
