LXXXVI. Forlitudo sancliicdis indeflciens

For kings and princes, who were held in such honor that heaven was named after them, have passed away; and those of the lowest rank in their own kind, and those who lacked wealth, ascend as if to Olympus from their poverty and need, yet they again fall short. The strength of holiness, from which all good things come and which carries all good things, will not fail, but will remain in the eternity of life. These things have been said about the souls of the repentant, who are being purified and saved, and they are faithful; let the faithful pay attention to these and keep them in mind as they build their knowledge. And I saw other spirits from that multitude, who were also shouting that Lucifer was worthy of honor and glory among the virtues. And they pretended to know the ineffable song of the blessed spirits, which is before the throne of God; and they insist on vanity in their words and actions, as if to persuade others. On the punishments of jesters. And I saw a dark cloud, in which there was a great fire that emitted smoke; just like that smoke is where the air is examined. In this fire, and in the smoke and this cloud, those souls were punished, who while they were in the world had labored under the vice of vain entertainment. For they suffered the fire because of the pleasure of that same fault, but the smoke, because of the desire they had for it; and the mist, because of the variety of vices they often indulged in within that same fault. And through the living Spirit, I saw and understood these things.
