XXVII. Miracula antiqua tam manifesta quam obnnbilata

However, what is from the shoulders down to his thighs, under those same clouds, is in another certain bright cloud; this means that from the origin of creatures to the true origin, as it is said, "Truth has risen from the earth," in the secret of His divinity, He has had many miracles in the brightness of honor; from which some He has revealed, but others He has obscured, because even the will of God, in the ordering and conservation of holy souls, is clear and bright in the hidden and spiritual life, which, however, cannot be made manifest to human knowledge.^✦ The Old Law is the sound of the Word. But he, like a certain millstone, was placed upon the shoulders of man, when he imposed on him the old legal burdens, which were like the sound of the Word, but not the Word itself. The sound of the Word is first heard, and then the Word is recognized. Thus, the Law was indeed a sound and shadow of the Word; after which the Word, namely Christ, appeared, and all things are carried by God. And from the thighs to the knees, everything is sustained in the earthly air, because just as all creatures proceed from the thigh, and just as they are supported and carried from the knees, so too all created things are upheld by God, nourished in fiery heat and the moisture of the air, in which the open life of the corporeal is sustained; just as the new people, rising from true chastity, reaches toward a bearable comfort, as is evident to all, even though it appears in earthly matters, yet it is tempered by many wonders and the sweetness of virtue. For when Divinity joined itself to the Virgin through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Word was known in His humanity, which He revealed through Himself as a new Law. And there, the sound and the Word came together as one, where the old and the new Law agreed. 21
