Honoring Our Parents

The prayer opens by acknowledging God’s command to honor parents and His promise to hear those who do, then asks for a gentle spirit to fulfill this duty.

Lord of heaven and earth, who commanded that if we want lasting standing in this world, we should honor our father and mother, from whom we received our life: I ask you, protect my dear parents from every bodily and spiritual affliction.1 Your promise stands, my God: you shame those who don't honor their father and mother; but those who do honor them, you hear in every prayer, and you make their children live long on this earth. So give me a calm and gentle mind, so that I may honor my parents and those who have cared for me, obediently take their words to heart, and not trouble them; so that I may not despise their old age and their failing strength, as that godless Ham did; but instead, because of the care and toil they spent on me, serve them till death as my lords, knowing I can never adequately repay their many labors and all the trouble they took with me.2

Following Christ’s Example

Turning to Christ as the model of filial obedience, the prayer confesses past failings, seeks forgiveness, and asks for growth in virtue and protection from evil.

Lord Jesus Christ, true example and bright mirror of all perfect virtue, who with great obedience obeyed your holy mother's word, and even in your bitter agony cared for her and entrusted her to your beloved disciple, and after your ascension into heaven bestowed on her the gifts of the Holy Spirit: grant that I too, throughout my life, may obediently care for my beloved parents, and never refuse any of their requests or wishes. Lord, forgive my disobedience up to now and my ungratefulness; do not remember the blindness and wickedness of my youth. Guard me from all evil company, from impurity, and from excess; and grant that I may grow not only in years, but in learning, in godly life, and in all perfection, both before God and before people.3 Amen.

Amen.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Early modern nyomós can mean weighty, substantial, or of lasting consequence. In this Decalogue paraphrase it is rendered as lasting standing rather than mere social importance.
  2. 2 ↩Kám is Ham (Genesis 9), who shamed his father Noah; the prayer uses him as the anti-type of filial reverence.
  3. 3 ↩üdőben (időben) rendered as 'in years' (growth in age/time), parallel to growth in learning and godliness; fajtalanság as sexual impurity/unchastity; tobzódás as revelry/debauched excess.
