Chapter 16PazmanyImadsagos.1.16

A betegségnek békességgel való szenvedéséért

Scourged as Beloved

The speaker accepts temporal chastisement as a sign of God's fatherly love, asking only to be spared eternal condemnation.

My God, scourge me in this world; visit me in this life with your blows—only don't strip me of everlasting goods, and don't cast me into eternal damnation.✦ Lord, you are accustomed to scourge those you take into your favor, and you test those who are yours in the furnace of affliction.✦1 Therefore, my God, let me be among those you love, since I am among those you scourge.✦

Peace and Mercy in Affliction

Turning to God as comfort and strength, the prayer asks either for relief or for the Holy Spirit's grace to suffer peacefully, then confesses sin and pleads for boundless mercy.

Lord, you are the comfort in our troubles and the strength in our frailty. So either ease my afflictions or strengthen my heart through your Holy Spirit, so that I may endure your visitations with peace. I confess, my God, that according to my sins I have deserved not only your earthly scourges, but eternal damnation as well; yet do not deal with me according to my sins, but according to your boundless mercy.✦

Thanksgiving and the Pattern of the Saints

The prayer gives thanks that eternal punishment has become temporal healing medicine, and asks for patient endurance like Job, Tobias, Joseph, David, and Christ, closing with Amen.

Thank you, Lord, that you have turned the eternal punishment I deserved into temporary pains, and that as my loving Father and good, provident physician, you chastise me: so that I will not put my trust in this foul body and the deceitful world, but turn all my desires to you, who are the true strength and encouragement of your sick ones. Grant, my God, that I may suffer your visitations as calmly as your faithful servants Job, Tobias, Joseph, and David; and may he who for my sake suffered the terrible torment of the cross with great peace—our Lord, Jesus Christ—encourage me in all my sicknesses.2 Amen.

Amen.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩nyavalyának can mean illness, misery, or affliction; rendered as 'affliction' to cover the chapter's illness focus without narrowing the furnace image to medical sickness alone.
  2. 2 ↩látogatásidat rendered as 'your visitations' (divine afflictions/trials as God's visiting), not ordinary social visits; common in traditional sickbed prayer.
