A Prayer Against Sloth
The petitioner asks Christ to remove spiritual sloth, grant joyful service to neighbor, and concludes with a plea for strength and a doxology.
Lord Jesus Christ, who for my sake did not spare any of your labor or toil; for my sake you hungered, thirsted, and prayed through whole nights: Take from my heart the sloth toward the things of God; grant that I may serve you with joy in fasting, in watching, and in unceasing prayer.✦ May I help my neighbor with goodwill in his need, feed him in his want, comfort him in his bitterness, and instruct him in his ignorance; may I gladly bear his burden, and diligently labor in all things—knowing not only that my time is short and afterward I cannot work, but also that our labor has a glorious fruit.✦✦ Help me therefore, my God, and strengthen me.1 Who live together with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, etc. Amen.

Uram, Jézus Krisztus, ki énérettem nem szántad semmi munkádat és fáradságodat; énérettem éheztél, szomjúhoztál, teljes éjszakákon imádkoztál: Vedd ki szívemből az isteni dolgokra való restséget; adjad, hogy örömmel szolgáljak néked, böjtölésben, vigyázásban, szünetlen imádkozásban. Felebarátomat jóakarattal segítsem szükségében, tápláljam fogyatkozásiban, vigasztaljam keserűségében, oktassam tudatlanságában; örömest hordozzam az ő terhét, és mindenekben szorgalmatosan munkálkodjam: tudván, nemcsak hogy rövid üdőm vagyon, és azután nem munkálkodhatom, de azt is, hogy dücsőséges gyümölcse vagyon a mi munkánknak. Segéts azért, én Istenem, és vastagíts engem. Ki az Atya és Szentlélek Istennel egyetemben élsz, &c. Amen.
