A haragtartás ellen
Christ's Example of Meekness
The prayer opens by invoking Christ's silent, forgiving suffering as the model for curbing our own anger and vengefulness.
Kind and merciful Redeemer, who like an innocent lamb were led to death without even opening your mouth; who for countless pains and insults did not repay evil with evil, but instead prayed to your holy Father for those who sinned against you: plant in our hearts your quiet, long-suffering gentleness, and curb our angry, vengeful desires.✦✦✦1
Petition for Grace to Forgive
The prayer asks for the grace to accept suffering as deserved, to overcome evil with good, to love enemies, and to bear trials with thanksgiving, concluding with a trinitarian doxology and Amen.
Grant, my God, that I may truly and honestly recognize that for my sins I have deserved far more than what I suffer from my neighbor; and that, suppressing the fury of anger, I may overcome the wrong done to me with good; that I may love those who hate me; and that I may accept with gratitude whatever your holy hand places upon me, so that through earthly suffering I may share in the joy of your glory. Who live together with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, etc.2 Amen.

Amen.
Scripture echoes
- ↩Isa.53.7;Acts.8.32 — He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb led to slaughter, and like a sheep silent before its shearers, so he did not open his mouth. Acts.8.32 — The passage of Scripture he was reading was this: "Like a sheep led to slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth.
- ↩Rom.12.17;1Pet.3.9;1Pet.2.23 — Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is good in the sight of all people. 1Pet.3.9 — Do not repay evil for evil or insult for insult; but on the contrary, bless, because for this you were called, so that you may inherit a blessing. 1Pet.2.23 — When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly.
- ↩Luke.23.34 — Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided his garments by casting lots.
Notes
- 1 ↩Hungarian 'nagy tűrhető szelídségedet' names Christ's quiet, forbearing gentleness (from tűr, 'to endure'); rendered as 'long-suffering gentleness' rather than merely 'great mildness'.
- 2 ↩Liturgical closing formula abbreviated in the source with '&c.'; English keeps the truncation rather than expanding to a full doxology the Hungarian does not spell out.
