A torkosság ellen
Prayer for Temperance
The prayer asks Christ, who fasted and suffered thirst on the cross, to grant the believer self-control over bodily excess and a longing for the heavenly banquet.
Lord Jesus Christ, who, wanting to curb the soft luxury and excess of the human body, by the example of your life not only went hungry for forty whole days for our sake, but even at the hour of your death chose vinegar and gall to quench your thirst: grant that I too may keep myself from all excess, from drunkenness, and from soft, dainty feeding of my body; and that, having tasted the sweetness of heavenly blessedness, I may not be greatly concerned with fattening food for the worms, but with all my strength long only for your heavenly wedding feast. Who live, etc. Amen.

Uram, Jézus Krisztus, ki az emberi testnek kínyességét és tobzódását akarván zabolázni, életednek példájával nemcsak negyven egész nap éhezél érettünk; de halálod óráján is szomjúságod oltására ecetet és epét választál: adjad, hogy én is minden tobzódástúl; részegségtűl és testemnek gyenge, kínyes táplálásátúl megoltalmazzam magamat; és a mennyei boldogságnak édességét megkóstolván, ne légyen nagy gondom a férgek eledelének hizlalására, hanem minden erőmmel csak a te mennyei lakodalmodba kívánkozzam. Ki élsz &c. Amen.
