The Posture of the Heart
The soul prepares for meditation by prostrating itself in humble reverence before the presence of God.
The invocation is made this way: your soul, feeling itself in the presence of God, prostrates itself in deep reverence, knowing it is unworthy to stand before such a sovereign Majesty. Yet, knowing that His goodness desires it, your soul asks Him for the grace to serve and adore Him well during this meditation.
Words of Holy Desire
The use of short, fervent scriptural prayers helps the soul express its need for divine grace and understanding.
If you like, you can use a few short, fervent words, such as these from David: "Do not cast me away, O my God, from Your presence, and do not take away the favor of Your Holy Spirit." Shine Your face upon Your servant, and I will consider Your wonders. Give me understanding, and I will look at Your law and keep it with all my heart. I am Your servant; give me Your spirit; and other similar words.
Communion with the Saints
Invoking the presence of angels and saints helps align the soul's sentiments with the mystery being meditated upon.
It’s also helpful to invoke your guardian angel and the holy people present at the mystery you’re meditating on. For example, in the mystery of the death of Our Lord, you can invoke Our Lady, Saint John, Mary Magdalene, and the good thief, so that the sentiments and inner movements they experienced may be shared with you. Likewise, in meditating on your own death, you can invoke your guardian angel, who will be present, so that he may inspire you with suitable thoughts; the same applies to other mysteries.

L’invocation se fait en cette manière : votre âme se sentant en la présence de Dieu, se prosterne en une extrême révérence, se connaissant très indigne de demeurer devant une si souveraine Majesté, et néanmoins, sachant que cette même bonté le veut, elle lui demande la grâce de la bien servir et adorer en cette méditation. Que si vous le voulez, vous pourrez user de quelques paroles courtes et enflammées, comme sont celles ici de David : « Ne me rejetez point, o mon Dieu, de devant votre face, et ne m’ôtez point la faveur de votre Saint Esprit. Éclairez votre face sur votre servante, et je considérerai vos merveilles. Donnez-moi l’entendement, et je regarderai votre loi et la garderai de tout mon cœur. Je suis votre servante, donnez-moi l’esprit » ; et telles paroles semblables à cela. Il vous servira encore d’ajouter l’invocation de votre bon ange et des sacrées personnes qui se trouveront au mystère que vous méditez ; comme en celui de la mort de Notre Seigneur, vous pourrez invoquer Notre Dame, saint Jean, la Madeleine, le bon larron, afin que les sentiments et mouvements intérieurs qu’ils y reçurent vous soient communiqués ; et en la méditation de votre mort, vous pourrez invoquer votre bon ange, qui se trouvera présent, afin qu’il vous inspire des considérations convenables ; et ainsi des autres mystères.
