The Healing Power of Confession
Confession transforms the shame of sin into a fragrant remedy through the merits of Christ's passion.
Here are the reflections you need for our purpose, dear Philothea. Once you've done that, go courageously and humbly make your general confession; but I urge you, don't let any kind of apprehension trouble you. The scorpion that has stung us is venomous in its sting, but when reduced to oil, it becomes a great remedy against its own sting: sin is only shameful when we commit it, but when transformed into confession and penance, it becomes honorable and beneficial. Contrition and confession are so beautiful and fragrant that they erase the ugliness and remove the stench of sin. Simon the leper said that Mary Magdalene was a sinner; but our Lord said otherwise, and He speaks no more except of the perfumes she poured out and the greatness of her charity. If we are truly humble, Philothea, our sin will infinitely displease us because God is offended by it, but the accusation of our sin will be sweet and pleasant to us because God is honored by it: this is a kind of relief in honestly telling the physician what torments us. When you arrive before your spiritual father, imagine yourself on the mountain of Calvary, under the feet of crucified Jesus Christ, from whom precious blood flows from all sides to wash you clean of your iniquities; for although it is not the Savior's own blood, it is nonetheless the merit of His shed blood that abundantly washes the penitents around the confessionals. So open your heart wide to let your sins come out through confession; as they leave, the precious merit of the divine passion will enter in to fill you with blessing.

But be sure to say everything clearly, simply, and honestly; satisfy your conscience in this once and for all. Once you’ve done that, listen to the counsel and instructions of God’s servant, and say in your heart: "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." Yes, Philothée, it is God you are listening to, since He said to His representatives: "Whoever listens to you listens to me." Then, take up the following declaration, which serves as the conclusion to all your contrition, and which you should have first meditated on and considered; read it attentively and with as much feeling as you can.

Voilà donc, ma chère Philothée, les méditations requises à notre intention. Quand vous les aurez faites, allez courageusement en esprit d’humilité faire votre confession générale ; mais, je vous prie, ne vous laissez point troubler par aucune sorte d’appréhension. Le scorpion qui nous a piqués est vénéneux en nous piquant, mais étant réduit en huile c’est un grand médicament contre sa propre piqûre : le péché n’est honteux que quand nous le faisons, mais étant converti en confession et pénitence, il est honorable et salutaire. La contrition et confession sont si belles et de si bonne odeur, qu’elles effacent la laideur et dissipent la puanteur du péché. Simon le lépreux disait que Madeleine était pécheresse ; mais Notre Seigneur dit que non, et ne parle plus sinon des parfums qu’elle répandit et de la grandeur de sa charité. Si nous sommes bien humbles, Philothée, notre péché nous déplaira infiniment parce que Dieu en est offensé, mais l’accusation de notre péché nous sera douce et agréable, parce que Dieu en est honoré : ce nous est une sorte d’allégement de bien dire au médecin ce qui nous tourmente. Quand vous serez arrivée devant votre père spirituel, imaginez-vous d’être en la montagne de Calvaire sous les pieds de Jésus-Christ crucifié, duquel le sang précieux distille de toutes parts pour vous laver de vos iniquités ; car, bien que ce ne soit pas le propre sang du Sauveur, c’est néanmoins le mérite de son sang répandu qui arrose abondamment les pénitents autour des confessionnaux. Ouvrez donc bien votre cœur pour en faire sortir les péchés par la confession ; car à mesure qu’ils en sortiront, le précieux mérite de la passion divine y entrera pour le remplir de bénédiction.
Mais dites bien tout, simplement et naïvement ; contentez bien votre conscience en cela pour une bonne fois. Et cela fait, écoutez l’avertissement et les ordonnances du serviteur de Dieu, et dites en votre cœur : « Parlez, Seigneur, car votre servante vous écoute ». Oui, c’est Dieu, Philothée, que vous écoutez, puisqu’il a dit à ses vicaires : « Qui vous écoute, m’écoute ». Prenez, par après, en main la protestation suivante, laquelle sert de conclusion à toute votre contrition, et que vous devez avoir premièrement méditée et considérée ; lisez-la attentivement et avec le plus de ressentiment qu’il vous sera possible.
