Preparation and Setting the Scene
The reader is invited to enter a state of prayer and imagine themselves standing between heaven and hell in the presence of their guardian angel.
Preparation 1. Place yourself in the presence of God. 2. Humble yourselves before Him, praying that He inspires you. Reflections Imagine yourself in a wide-open countryside, all alone with your guardian angel, just as young Tobit was when he traveled to Rages. He shows you the open paradise above, with all the joys you envisioned during your meditation on heaven, and then he shows you the open hell below, with all the torments described in your meditation on hell. In your imagination, you are placed there, kneeling before your guardian angel.
The Weight of the Choice
The meditator considers the gravity of choosing between eternal life and eternal death, supported by the grace of God and the encouragement of their angel.
1. Consider that it is very true that you are in the midst of heaven and hell, and that both are open to receive you, depending on the choice you make. Keep in mind that the choice you make between one or the other in this world will last forever in the next. And although both are open to receive you, according to your choice, God, who is ready to give you either one through His justice or the other through His mercy, nonetheless desires with an unparalleled longing that you choose paradise; and your good angel urges you with all his might, offering you from God a thousand graces and a thousand helps to assist you in your ascent. The Call of the Heavenly Host
Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and the saints invite the soul to embrace the path of devotion and eternal salvation.
4. Jesus Christ looks down on you from heaven with kindness and gently invites you: "Come, my dear soul, to eternal rest in the arms of my goodness, which has prepared immortal delights for you in the abundance of its love." See with your inner eyes the holy Virgin who maternally invites you: "Take courage, my daughter; do not despise the desires of my Son, nor the many sighs I breathe for you as I join Him in seeking your eternal salvation." See the saints who urge you, and a million holy souls who gently invite you, desiring only to see your heart joined to theirs, to praise God forever, assuring you that the way to heaven is not as difficult as the world makes it: "Take heart, they say to you, dear friend; whoever carefully considers the path of devotion by which we have ascended will see that we have come to these delights through delights incomparably greater than those of the world."
The Act of Election
The soul formally rejects the path of hell and irrevocably chooses paradise, committing to follow the guidance of the saints and the guardian angel.
Election. 1. O hell, I hate you now and forever; I hate your torments and your pains; I hate your wretched and miserable eternity, and especially those eternal blasphemies and curses that you eternally spew against my God. And turning my heart and soul toward you, O beautiful paradise, eternal glory, enduring happiness, I choose forever and irrevocably my home and dwelling within your beautiful and sacred houses, and in the saints and desirable tabernacles. I bless, O my God, your mercy and accept the offer you wish to make to me. O Jesus, my Savior, I accept your eternal love, and I acknowledge the gift you have made for me of a place and home in this blessed Jerusalem, not for any other reason than to love and bless you forever. Accept the favors that the Virgin and the saints offer you. Promise them that you will make your way to them; reach out to your good angel so that he may lead you there; encourage your soul in this choice.

Imaginez-vous d’être en une rase campagne, toute seule avec votre bon ange, comme était le jeune Tobie allant en Ragès, et qu’il vous fait voir en haut le paradis ouvert, avec les plaisirs représentés en la méditation du paradis que vous avez faite ; puis, du côté d’en bas, il vous fait voir l’enfer ouvert, avec tous les tourments décrits en la méditation de l’enfer. Vous étant colloquée ainsi par imagination, et mise à genoux devant votre bon ange :
1. Considérez qu’il est très vrai que vous êtes au milieu du paradis et de l’enfer, et que l’un et l’autre est ouvert pour vous recevoir, selon le choix que vous en ferez.
2. Considérez que le choix que l’on fait de l’un ou de l’autre en ce monde, durera éternellement en l’autre.
3. Et encore que l’un et l’autre soit ouvert pour vous recevoir, selon que vous le choisirez, si est-ce que Dieu, qui est appareillé de vous donner, ou l’un par sa justice ou l’autre par sa miséricorde, désire néanmoins d’un désir nonpareil que vous choisissiez le paradis ; et votre bon ange vous en presse de tout son pouvoir, vous offrant de la part de Dieu mille grâces et mille secours pour vous aider à la montée.
4. Jésus-Christ, du haut du ciel, vous regarde en sa débonnaireté et vous invite doucement : « Viens, o ma chère âme, au repos éternel entre les bras de ma bonté, qui t’a préparé les délices immortelles en l’abondance de son amour ». Voyez de vos yeux intérieurs la sainte Vierge qui vous convie maternellement : « Courage, ma fille, ne veuille pas mépriser les désirs de mon Fils, ni tant de soupirs que je jette pour toi, respirant avec lui ton salut éternel ». Voyez les saints qui vous exhortent, et un million de saintes âmes qui vous convient doucement ne désirant que de voir un jour votre cœur joint au leur, pour louer Dieu à jamais, et vous assurant que le chemin du ciel n’est point si malaisé que le monde le fait : « Hardiment, vous disent-elles, très chère amie ; qui considérera bien le chemin de la dévotion par lequel nous sommes montées, il verra que nous sommes venues en ces délices, par des délices incomparablement plus souèves que celles du monde.
Élection
1. O enfer, je te déteste maintenant et éternellement ; je déteste tes tourments et tes peines ; je déteste ton infortunée et malheureuse éternité, et surtout ces éternels blasphèmes et malédictions que tu vomis éternellement contre mon Dieu. Et retournant mon cœur et mon âme de ton côté, o beau paradis, gloire éternelle, félicité perdurable, je choisis à jamais irrévocablement mon domicile et mon séjour dedans tes belles et sacrées, maisons, et en les saints et désirables tabernacles. Je bénis, o mon Dieu, votre miséricorde et accepte l’offre qu’il vous plaît de m’en faire. O Jésus, mon Sauveur, j’accepte votre amour éternel, et avoue l’acquisition que vous avez faite pour moi d’une place et logis en cette bienheureuse Jérusalem, non tant pour aucune autre chose, comme pour vous aimer et bénir à jamais.
2. Acceptez les faveurs que la Vierge et les saints vous présentent ; promettez-leur que vous vous acheminerez à eux ; tendez la main à votre bon ange afin qu’il vous y conduise ; encouragez votre âme à ce choix.
