The Necessity of Good Works
Good works are the natural response of gratitude for the redemption Christ has accomplished in us.
Since we are redeemed from our misery entirely without our merit by grace through Christ, why should we do good works? We should do good works because Christ, after redeeming us with His blood, also renews us through His Holy Spirit into His image, so that we may show our gratitude to God for His kindness with our whole lives and that He may be praised through us. Furthermore, we should become certain of our faith through its fruits in ourselves and win our neighbors for Christ with a life that pleases God.
The Warning Against Ungodliness
A life of unrepentant sin is incompatible with the inheritance of God's kingdom.
Can those who don't turn to God from their ungrateful, unrepentant lives be saved? Absolutely not; for Scripture says that no immoral person, idolater, adulterer, thief, greedy person, drunkard, slanderer, robber, or anyone like them will inherit the kingdom of God.

Da wir nun aus unserm Elend ganz ohne unser Verdienst aus Gnade durch Christus erlöst sind, warum sollen wir gute Werke tun? Wir sollen gute Werke tun, weil Christus, nachdem er uns mit seinem Blut erkauft hat, uns auch durch seinen Heiligen Geist erneuert zu seinem Ebenbild, damit wir mit unserem ganzen Leben uns dankbar gegen Gott für seine Wohltat erweisen und er durch uns gepriesen wird. Danach auch, dass wir bei uns selbst unsers Glaubens aus seinen Früchten gewiss werden und mit einem Leben, das Gott gefällt, unsern Nächsten auch für Christus gewinnen.
Können denn auch die selig werden, die sich von ihrem undankbaren, unbußfertigen Leben nicht zu Gott bekehren? Keineswegs; denn die Schrift sagt: kein Unzüchtiger, Götzendiener, Ehebrecher, Dieb, Geiziger, Trunkenbold, Lästerer, Räuber und dergleichen wird das Reich Gottes erben.
