The Supper vs. the Mass

This section contrasts the Reformed understanding of the Lord's Supper as a memorial meal with the Roman Catholic view of the Mass as a sacrifice, while acknowledging modern ecumenical progress.

What is the difference between the Lord's Supper and the papal Mass? The Lord's Supper assures us that we have complete forgiveness of all our sins through the one-time sacrifice of Jesus Christ, which He accomplished once on the cross, and that we are incorporated into Christ through the Holy Spirit, who is now at the right hand of the Father in heaven with His true body and is to be worshiped there. However, the Mass teaches that the living and the dead don't have forgiveness of sins through the suffering of Christ unless Christ is still sacrificed daily for them by the priests of the Mass, and that Christ is physically present under the appearance of bread and wine and therefore is to be worshiped there. Thus, the Mass is fundamentally nothing other than a denial of the one sacrifice and suffering of Jesus Christ and a cursed idolatry. The leadership of the Reformed Church has stated: This rejection was formulated 400 years ago and cannot be maintained in its current form regarding content and language. The polemic against the repetition of Christ's one-time sacrifice on the cross and the worship of the elements (bread and wine) doesn't do justice to what has been achieved in ecumenical dialogue. The enduring difference in teaching lies in the fact that the Eucharist in the Roman Catholic Church is understood as a 'sacrifice,' while the Lord's Supper in the Protestant service is understood as a 'meal celebration'; however, this difference shouldn't lead to church division.

Who Should Come to the Table?

The catechism defines the proper disposition of a communicant as one of repentance and faith, warning against the dangers of partaking unworthily.

Who should come to the Lord's table? Those who are displeased with themselves because of their sins, yet trust that God has forgiven them and that their remaining weakness is covered by the suffering and death of Christ; those who also desire to strengthen their faith more and more and to improve their lives. But anyone who comes to the Lord's Supper unrepentant and hypocritical eats and drinks judgment upon themselves.

The Integrity of the Covenant

The church is instructed to protect the sanctity of the covenant by excluding those who live in open, unrepentant sin.

Are those who show themselves to be unbelievers and godless in their confession and life allowed to come to the Lord's Supper? No; otherwise, the covenant of God would be dishonored, and His wrath would be stirred up against the whole congregation. Therefore, the Christian Church must exclude such individuals through the office of the keys until they amend their lives.
