The Nature of the Signs
The bread and wine in the Lord's Supper are not physically transformed but serve as divine signs and pledges.
Are bread and wine transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ? No. Just as the water in baptism is not transformed into the Blood of Christ or washes away sins, but is a sign and pledge from God, so too the bread in the Lord's Supper is not the Body of Christ, even if it is referred to as such in the words used during the Supper.
The Spiritual Meaning of the Supper
Christ uses the language of the Supper to assure believers that His body and blood are the true nourishment for their souls.
Why does Christ call the bread His body and the cup His blood, or refer to the cup as the new covenant in His blood, and why does Paul speak of the Communion of the body and blood of Jesus Christ? Christ doesn’t speak this way without a significant reason. He wants to teach us that just as bread and wine sustain our earthly life, so His crucified body and His shed blood are the true food and drink for our souls, leading to eternal life. Moreover, He wants to assure us through this visible sign and pledge that we truly receive through His Holy Spirit a share in His body and blood, just as we receive these holy signs with our mouths in remembrance of Him. All His suffering and obedience are assured to us as if we ourselves had suffered and accomplished all of it.

Werden denn Brot und Wein in Leib und Blut Christi verwandelt? Nein. Wie das Wasser bei der Taufe nicht in das Blut Christi verwandelt wird oder selbst die Sünden abwäscht, sondern Gottes Wahrzeichen und Pfand dafür ist, so wird auch das Brot im Abendmahl nicht der Leib Christi, auch wenn es in den Worten, die beim Abendmahl gebraucht werden, als der Leib Christi bezeichnet wird.
Warum nennt denn Christus das Brot seinen Leib und den Kelch sein Blut oder nennt den Kelch den neuen Bund in seinem Blut, und warum spricht Paulus von der Gemeinschaft des Leibes und Blutes Jesu Christi? Christus redet so nicht ohne große Ursache. Er will uns damit lehren: Wie Brot und Wein das zeitliche Leben erhalten, so sind sein gekreuzigter Leib und sein vergossenes Blut die wahre Speise und der wahre Trank unserer Seele zum ewigen Leben. Darüberhinaus will er uns durch dieses sichtbare Zeichen und Pfand gewiss machen, dass wir so wahrhaftig durch seinen Heiligen Geist an seinem Leib und Blut Anteil bekommen wie wir diese heiligen Wahrzeichen mit unserem Mund zu seinem Gedächtnis empfangen. All sein Leiden und sein Gehorsam sind uns so gewiss zugeeignet, als hätten wir selbst das alles gelitten und vollbracht.
