The Assurance of the Sacrament
The Lord's Supper serves as a visible sign and seal of Christ's sacrifice and our spiritual nourishment.
How are you reminded and assured in the Holy Communion that you share in the one sacrifice of Christ on the cross and in all his gifts? Christ has commanded me and all believers to eat of the broken bread and drink from the cup in remembrance of him. He has promised that, first, his body is as certainly sacrificed and broken for me on the cross, and his blood is as certainly poured out for me, as I see with my own eyes that the Lord's bread is broken for me and the cup is given to me. Secondly, that he himself nourishes and refreshes my soul with his crucified body and shed blood as certainly for eternal life, as I receive and physically enjoy the bread and the cup of the Lord from the hand of the servant, which are given to me as certain signs of the body and blood of Christ.
Communion with Christ
Eating and drinking Christ's body and blood signifies our spiritual union with Him through the Holy Spirit.
What does it mean to eat the crucified body of Christ and drink his shed blood? It means not only to accept with a believing heart the entire suffering and death of Christ and thereby receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life, but also to be united more and more with his glorified body through the Holy Spirit, who dwells in Christ and in us, so that, even though he is in heaven and we are on earth, we are still one body with him and live and are governed by one Spirit forever.
The Scriptural Promise
The promise of nourishment in the Lord's Supper is grounded in the words of institution and the apostolic witness.
Where has Christ promised that He will surely feed and nourish believers with His body and blood, just as they eat from this broken bread and drink from this cup? In the institution of the Lord's Supper, the Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took the bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said: "Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, He took the cup after the meal and said: "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink from this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. This promise is repeated by the Apostle Paul when he says: "The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ?" The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? For we, though many, are one body, because we all partake of the one bread. “

Wie wirst du im Heiligen Abendmahl erinnert und gewiss gemacht, dass du an dem einzigen Opfer Christi am Kreuz und allen seinen Gaben Anteil hast? Christus hat mir und allen Gläubigen befohlen, zu seinem Gedächtnis von dem gebrochenen Brot zu essen und von dem Kelch zu trinken. Dabei hat er verheißen: Erstens, dass sein Leib so gewiss für mich am Kreuz geopfert und gebrochen und sein Blut für mich vergossen ist, wie ich mit Augen sehe, dass das Brot des Herrn mir gebrochen und der Kelch mir gegeben wird. Zweitens, dass er selbst meine Seele mit seinem gekreuzigten Leib und vergossenen Blut so gewiss zum ewigen Leben speist und tränkt, wie ich aus der Hand des Dieners empfange und leiblich genieße das Brot und den Kelch des Herrn, welche mir als gewisse Wahrzeichen des Leibes und Blutes Christi gegeben werden.
Was heißt, den gekreuzigten Leib Christi essen und sein vergossenes Blut trinken? Es heißt nicht allein, mit gläubigem Herzen das ganze Leiden und Sterben Christi annehmen und dadurch Vergebung der Sünde und ewiges Leben empfangen, sondern auch, durch den Heiligen Geist, der zugleich in Christus und in uns wohnt, mit seinem verherrlichten Leib mehr und mehr vereinigt werden, so dass, obgleich er im Himmel ist und wir auf Erden sind, wir doch ein Leib mit ihm sind und von einem Geist ewig leben und regiert werden.
Wo hat Christus verheißen, dass er die Gläubigen so gewiss mit seinem Leib und Blut speist und tränkt, wie sie von diesem gebrochenen Brot essen und von diesem Kelch trinken? In der Einsetzung des Abendmahls:»Der Herr Jesus, in der Nacht, da er verraten ward, nahm er das Brot, dankte und brach’s und sprach: (Nehmet, esset,) das ist mein Leib, der für euch gegeben wird; das tut zu meinem Gedächtnis. Desgleichen nahm er auch den Kelch nach dem Mahl und sprach: Dieser Kelch ist der neue Bund in meinem Blut; das tut, sooft ihr daraus trinket, zu meinem Gedächtnis. Denn sooft ihr von diesem Brot esst und aus dem Kelch trinkt, verkündigt ihr den Tod des Herrn, bis er kommt. « Diese Verheißung wiederholt der Apostel Paulus, wenn er sagt:»Der gesegnete Kelch, den wir segnen, ist der nicht die Gemeinschaft des Blutes Christi? Das Brot, das wir brechen, ist das nicht die Gemeinschaft des Leibes Christi? Denn ein Brot ist’s: so sind wir viele ein Leib, weil wir alle an einem Brot teilhaben. «
