The Sign and Seal of Baptism
Baptism serves as an outward sign and assurance of Christ's cleansing work.
How are you reminded and assured in holy baptism that Christ's unique sacrifice on the cross is for your benefit? Christ instituted this outward washing with water and promised that, just as I am surely washed with His blood and Spirit from the impurity of my soul—which comes from all my sins—I am also outwardly cleansed by the water that removes the uncleanness of the body.
The Meaning of Spiritual Cleansing
Spiritual washing involves both the forgiveness of sins through Christ's blood and the renewal of life by the Holy Spirit.
What does it mean to be washed with the blood and Spirit of Christ? It means to receive forgiveness of sins from God out of grace, because of the blood Christ shed for us in His sacrifice on the cross. It also means to be renewed by the Holy Spirit and sanctified as a member of Christ, so that we die to sin more and more and live a life that pleases God.
The Promise of Christ
Christ established the promise of baptism through his command to baptize and the scriptural witness to its power.
Where did Christ promise that we are as surely washed with his blood and Spirit as we are with the water of baptism? In the institution of baptism, he says: "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." This promise is repeated where Scripture calls baptism the "washing of regeneration" and the "washing away of sins."

Wie wirst du in der heiligen Taufe erinnert und gewiss gemacht, dass das einmalige Opfer Christi am Kreuz dir zugut kommt? Christus hat dies äußerliche Wasserbad eingesetzt und dabei verheißen, dass ich so gewiss mit seinem Blut und Geist von der Unreinigkeit meiner Seele, das ist, von allen meinen Sünden, reingewaschen bin, wie ich äußerlich durch das Wasser gereinigt werde, das die Unsauberkeit des Leibes hinweg nimmt.
Was heißt, mit dem Blut und Geist Christi gewaschen sein? Es heißt, Vergebung der Sünde von Gott aus Gnade haben um des Blutes Christi willen, das er in seinem Opfer am Kreuz für uns vergossen hat. Es heißt ferner, durch den Heiligen Geist erneuert und zu einem Glied Christi geheiligt sein, so dass wir je länger je mehr der Sünde absterben und ein Leben führen, das Gott gefällt.
Wo hat Christus verheißen, dass wir so gewiss mit seinem Blut und Geist wie mit dem Taufwasser gewaschen sind? Bei der Einsetzung der Taufe sagt er:»Gehet hin und machet zu Jüngern alle Völker: Taufet sie auf den Namen des Vaters und des Sohnes und des Heiligen Geistes. «»Wer da glaubt und getauft wird, der wird selig werden; wer aber nicht glaubt, der wird verdammt werden. « Diese Verheißung wird dort wiederholt, wo die Heilige Schrift die Taufe das»Bad der Wiedergeburt« und die»Abwaschung der Sünden« nennt.
