The Source of Faith
Faith is a gift worked in the heart by the Holy Spirit through the Gospel and the Sacraments.
If faith alone gives us a share in Christ and all his blessings, where does such faith come from? The Holy Spirit works faith in our hearts through the preaching of the holy Gospel and confirms it through the use of the holy Sacraments.
Signs and Seals of Grace
Sacraments are visible signs instituted by God to seal the promise of forgiveness found in Christ's sacrifice.
What are the Sacraments? They are visible, holy signs and seals. God instituted them to make the promise of the Gospel clearer to us through their use and to seal it: that He grants us forgiveness of sins and eternal life out of grace, based on the once-for-all sacrifice of Christ accomplished on the cross. Do both the Word and the Sacrament point our faith to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross as the only foundation of our salvation? Yes; for the Holy Spirit teaches in the Gospel and confirms through the holy Sacraments that our entire salvation is founded on the one-time sacrifice of Christ, which happened for us on the cross.

Wenn nun allein der Glaube uns Anteil an Christus und allen seinen Wohltaten gibt, woher kommt solcher Glaube? Der Heilige Geist wirkt den Glauben in unseren Herzen durch die Predigt des heiligen Evangeliums und bestätigt ihn durch den Gebrauch der heiligen Sakramente.
Was sind Sakramente? Es sind sichtbare heilige Wahrzeichen und Siegel. Gott hat sie eingesetzt, um uns durch ihren Gebrauch den Zuspruch des Evangeliums besser verständlich zu machen und zu versiegeln: dass er uns auf Grund des einmaligen Opfers Christi, am Kreuz vollbracht, Vergebung der Sünden und ewiges Leben aus Gnade schenkt.
Sollen denn beide, Wort und Sakrament, unseren Glauben auf das Opfer Jesu Christi am Kreuz als den einzigen Grund unserer Seligkeit hinweisen? Ja; denn der Heilige Geist lehrt im Evangelium und bestätigt durch die heiligen Sakramente, dass unsere ganze Seligkeit gegründet ist auf das einmalige Opfer Christi, das für uns am Kreuz geschah.
