The Insufficiency of Human Works
Our best works cannot justify us before God because they remain imperfect and stained by sin.
Why can’t our good works make us completely or partially righteous before God? The righteousness that stands before God’s judgment must be perfect and entirely in line with the divine law. But even our best works in this life are all imperfect and stained with sin.
Grace, Reward, and Gratitude
While works do not earn merit, they are the necessary fruit of gratitude for those united to Christ by faith.
Do our good works earn us nothing, even though God wants to reward them in this life and the next? This reward doesn't come from merit, but from grace. But doesn't this teaching make people careless and without conscience? No; it's impossible for those who are rooted in Christ through true faith not to bear the fruit of gratitude.

Warum können denn unsere guten Werke uns nicht ganz oder teilweise vor Gott gerecht machen? Die Gerechtigkeit, die vor Gottes Gericht bestehen soll, muss vollkommen sein und dem göttlichen Gesetz ganz und gar entsprechen. Aber auch unsere besten Werke sind in diesem Leben alle unvollkommen und mit Sünde befleckt.
Verdienen aber unsere guten Werke nichts, obwohl Gott sie doch in diesem und dem zukünftigen Leben belohnen will? Diese Belohnung geschieht nicht aus Verdienst, sondern aus Gnade.
Macht aber diese Lehre die Menschen nicht leichtfertig und gewissenlos? Nein; denn es ist unmöglich, dass Menschen, die Christus durch wahren Glauben eingepflanzt sind, nicht Frucht der Dankbarkeit bringen.
