The Benefit of Faith
The believer finds assurance of justification and eternal life through faith in Christ.
What good does it do you to believe all this? I am justified before God through Christ and am an heir of eternal life.
The Gift of Righteousness
Righteousness is received as a free gift from God, covering the believer's sin through Christ's perfect obedience.
How are you righteous before God? Only through true faith in Jesus Christ. My conscience accuses me, for I have sinned grievously against all of God's commandments, have never kept any of them, and am still inclined toward all evil. Yet God grants me the complete satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ, entirely without any merit of my own, out of pure grace. He counts them to me as if I had never committed or had any sin and as if I had fully accomplished all the obedience that Christ has rendered for me, if I accept this benefit with a believing heart.
Faith as the Instrument
Faith is not a meritorious work, but the means by which the believer receives Christ's righteousness.
Why do you say that you are justified before God only through faith? It isn't because my faith is a meritorious work that I please God. Only the satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ is my righteousness before God. I can only accept and make them my own through faith.

Was hilft es dir aber nun, wenn du das alles glaubst? Ich bin dadurch in Christus vor Gott gerecht und ein Erbe des ewigen Lebens.
Wie bist du gerecht vor Gott? Allein durch wahren Glauben an Jesus Christus. Zwar klagt mich mein Gewissen an, dass ich gegen alle Gebote Gottes schwer gesündigt und keines je gehalten habe und noch immer zu allem Bösen geneigt bin. Gott aber schenkt mir ganz ohne mein Verdienst aus lauter Gnade die vollkommene Genugtuung, Gerechtigkeit und Heiligkeit Christi. Er rechnet sie mir an, als hätte ich nie eine Sünde begangen noch gehabt und selbst den ganzen Gehorsam vollbracht, den Christus für mich geleistet hat, wenn ich allein diese Wohltat mit gläubigem Herzen annehme.
Warum sagst du, dass du allein durch den Glauben gerecht bist? Ich gefalle Gott nicht deswegen, weil mein Glaube ein verdienstvolles Werk wäre. Allein die Genugtuung, Gerechtigkeit und Heiligkeit Christi ist meine Gerechtigkeit vor Gott. Ich kann sie nicht anders als durch den Glauben annehmen und mir zueignen.
