The Anointing of Christ
Christ is defined by his divine appointment and anointing as our Prophet, Priest, and King.
Why is he called Christ, which means 'the Anointed One'? He is appointed by God the Father and anointed with the Holy Spirit to be our highest Prophet and Teacher, who fully reveals to us God's hidden counsel and will regarding our salvation; and to be our only High Priest, who has redeemed us with the one-time sacrifice of his body and continually intercedes for us before the Father; and to be our eternal King, who rules us with his Word and Spirit and protects and sustains us in the salvation he has acquired.
The Calling of a Christian
Believers share in Christ's anointing, leading to a life of confession, sacrifice, and spiritual warfare.
Why are you called a Christian? Because I am a member of Christ through faith and share in his anointing, so that I also confess his name, offer myself to him as a living sacrifice of thanks, and with a clear conscience fight against sin and the devil in this life, and afterwards reign with him forever over all creatures.

Warum wird er Christus, das heißt»Gesalbter« genannt? Er ist von Gott dem Vater eingesetzt und mit dem Heiligen Geist gesalbt zu unserem obersten Propheten und Lehrer, der uns Gottes verborgenen Rat und Willen von unserer Erlösung vollkommen offenbart; und zu unserem einzigen Hohenpriester, der uns mit dem einmaligen Opfer seines Leibes erlöst hat und uns alle Zeit mit seiner Fürbitte vor dem Vater vertritt; und zu unserem ewigen König, der uns mit seinem Wort und Geist regiert und bei der erworbenen Erlösung schützt und erhält.
Warum wirst aber du ein Christ genannt? Weil ich durch den Glauben ein Glied Christi bin und dadurch an seiner Salbung Anteil habe, damit auch ich seinen Namen bekenne, mich ihm zu einem lebendigen Dankopfer hingebe und mit freiem Gewissen in diesem Leben gegen die Sünde und den Teufel streite und hernach in Ewigkeit mit ihm über alle Geschöpfe herrsche.
