Primera parte.
The Fivefold Path of Prayer
The author outlines a structured method of prayer consisting of preparation, reading, meditation, thanksgiving, and petition, intended primarily for beginners.
It's worth noting that you shouldn't spend your entire time on meditation alone, as two parts can precede it—preparation and reading—and two others can follow: thanksgiving and petition. For first we should prepare our heart for this exercise; then it will be good to read what we are going to meditate on; after the reading should come meditation on what has been read; and then we can finish with a devout thanksgiving for all God's benefits, and with a petition for everything we feel is necessary, both for our own souls and for the souls of our neighbors.1 We will cover these five parts more fully in their proper place. Beginners can follow this arrangement, as those who are more practiced don't need these principles and rules as much.
Guidelines for Meditative Practice
Practical advice is given on how to utilize the provided meditation summaries, emphasizing quality of reflection over quantity of points covered.
It's worth noting that the night meditations are first presented in summary, outlining the main points to consider in each, followed by a fuller explanation of those stages. This way, after reading through a few times, you can better understand and meditate on what was treated more briefly before. It is true that for the meditations on the sacred Passion, this summary was not included at the beginning, as the text of the evangelists provided there seemed sufficient for that purpose. You don't need to think through every main point marked out there each time; two or three will do—or more or fewer, depending on your personal devotion and the time you have. A single mystery or stage carefully considered does more good than many rushed through in a hurry. Even so, many things are noted down so that, amid such a variety of considerations, each person may choose what suits them best.
The Weekly Cycle
The chapter concludes by introducing the transition into the specific morning meditations for each day of the week.
The following are the first seven morning meditations for the days of the week.
