Prayers upon sundry Publick Occasions.
For the High Court of Parliament
A prayer for the guidance and blessing of the Parliament and the Sovereign.
Most gracious God, we humbly ask you, not only for this Kingdom in general, but especially for the High Court of Parliament, assembled under our most religious and gracious King at this time; that you would be pleased to bless and guide all their consultations, for the preservation of your glory, the good of your Church, and the safety, honor, and welfare of our Sovereign and his kingdoms. Lord, look upon the humility and devotion with which they have come into your courts. And they have come into your House with assured confidence in the merits and mercies of Christ, our blessed Savior, that you will not deny them the grace and favor they ask of you. Therefore, O Lord, bless them with the wisdom you know is necessary to succeed, and bring great designs into action; make the maturity of your Majesties and their counsels the happiness and blessing of this commonwealth. We humbly ask for these and all other necessities for them, for us, and for your whole Church, in the Name and through the mediation of Jesus Christ, our most blessed Lord and Savior. Amen.
For the Nation in Times of War
A petition for divine protection over the army and navy during conflict.
O Eternal God and our most gracious Father, you are the Lord of Hosts, and the strength of all nations comes from you: If you don't keep the city, the watchman wakes in vain. And no victory can depend on the most just designs, the wisest counsels, or the strongest armies, if you don't teach their hands to war and their fingers to fight. You are the steady hope of all the ends of the earth, and of those who travel and remain on the broad sea. Lord, at this time we need your special assistance both by land and sea; and by the mercy of Christ, deny us neither. Be with our armies, and the armies of our allies and associates by land; be with our navy at sea. Do not be absent from either in power and in great mercy, until you have brought them back with honor and a settled peace. Lord, turn our enemies' swords into their own bosoms: For we sought peace and pursued it; and while we did so, they did more than make themselves ready for battle. We are your servants, truly and heartily sorry for our sins. Lord, forgive them, and then we will trust in you to pour out all your blessings upon this and all other plans and actions of this State, undertaken for your glory, the honor of our most gracious King Charles, and the peace and welfare of this Church and Commonwealth. Grant this, we humbly beseech you, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.
A Prayer for Repentance and Deliverance
A confession of national sins amidst pestilence, war, and famine.
Most gracious God, we humbly ask you to pardon and forgive all our many, great, and grievous transgressions. We can't hope that you'll lift your punishments until you've forgiven our sins. We may not think that you will forgive our sins until our humiliation and repentance come to ask for forgiveness. We've been too slow to come, and now you've clothed your Mercy in Justice to compel us to you. Lord, we believe, but please increase our faith, our devotion, our repentance, and all Christian virtues within us. Right now, the instruments of your heavy displeasure fall upon us, and while we suffer under one judgment, you threaten the rest. The pestilence spreads through our streets, as if it's seeking whom to devour. No strength can stand against it, and it threatens to make families, even cities, desolate. While the pestilence consumes your people, we hear the sound of war, and the sword calls for those it would devour. In the meantime, the heavens are dark above us, and the clouds bring famine, ready to swallow what the pestilence and the sword leave alive, unless you send more favorable weather to provide the fruits of the earth in their season. Our sins have earned all this and more, and we neither do nor can deny it. We have nowhere to go but to your mercy. We have no way to that, but by the all-sufficient merit of your Son, our blessed Savior. Lord, for his merit and mercies' sake, look down upon us, your distressed servants: Command your angel to stay his hand, and remember that in death we cannot praise you, nor give thanks in the pit. Go forth with our armies when they go, and make us remember that all our strength and deliverance is in you. Clear up the heavens over us, and do not take away from us the great abundance with which you have crowned the earth: but remember us, O you who feed the ravens when they call upon you. Lord, we need all your mercies to come upon us, and your mercies are entirely in Christ, in whom, and for whose sake, we ask them of you, who live and reign in the unity of the Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
For Protection Against Enemies
A prayer for mercy and defense against the threats posed by external and internal enemies.
O Eternal God and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech you to be merciful to us and to be near to help us in all those difficulties that our sins threaten to bring upon us. Our enemies are strengthened against us by our many rebellions against you. And we deserve to suffer whatever our enemies threaten. But there is mercy with you, so that you may be feared. O Lord, show us this mercy, and give us grace to fear you in such a way that we may never be brought to fear or feel them. And whenever you will correct us for our sins, let us fall into your hands, and not into the hands of men. Grant this for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Mediator and Redeemer. Amen. O Eternal God and most gracious Father, we have earned whatever your Law threatens against sinners. Our contempt for your Divine worship is great; we hear your Word, but we don't obey it. Forgive us, O Lord; forgive us these and all our other grievous sins. Give us light in our understanding, readiness and obedience in our will, discretion in our words and actions; true, serious, and loyal efforts for the peace and prosperity of Jerusalem, the unity and glory of this Church and State: that we may love it and prosper in it, and be full of grace in this life, and filled with glory in the life to come, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Thanksgiving for the Cessation of Pestilence
A prayer of gratitude for the end of the plague and a request for continued health.
O most merciful God, we praise and thank you for the wonderful end of the recent raging pestilence in the chief city of this kingdom and in other places. Lord, show us further mercy, and look upon all parts of this land with tender compassion. Hold back the destroying angel so that he may not enter places that are still free, nor cause further devastation in those that have already been visited. Comfort those who are sick, preserve those who are healthy, receive those who die into your mercy, so that living and dying, they and we may continue as your faithful servants, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
For the Safety of the Realm
A petition for the preservation of the kingdom and the Reformed churches.
O most gracious God and loving Father, we have felt your manifold mercies; no nation has experienced more. Yet we have committed sins against you, and few nations are greater in this regard. Do not enter into judgment with us, O Lord, but for the sake of Christ and his mercy, pacify your anger and save us from the malice and cruelty of our enemies. It is our crying sins that have brought these troubles upon us. Let it be an addition to your usual mercy to restrain their fury. To this end, Lord, put your bridle into their mouths and your bit between their teeth. Frustrate their designs, and let them find no way in our seas, nor any path in our floods; but scatter them with your tempest and follow them with all your storms, so that we, being delivered by your hand, may bless and honor your name, devoutly serving you all our days, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O Lord, gracious Governor of all the kingdoms of the earth, look down in mercy upon this realm and all other Reformed churches. Save and deliver us and them from the hands of all who threaten our destruction. Protect our gracious sovereign, guide his counsel, accompany his armies, and be a wall of brass and a strong tower of defense against his and our enemies; so that we, being safe through your mercy, may live to serve you in your Church and always give you praise and glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
For the Royal Succession
Prayers for the Queen's safe delivery and the blessing of royal heirs.
O Eternal God and merciful Father, all peace and strength of kingdoms comes from you; lineal succession is your great blessing upon princes and states, and it is the means to preserve unity and confirm strength. We therefore give you humble and heartfelt thanks, not only for all your blessings, but especially at this time for your great mercy and loving-kindness to our dread Sovereign, his Royal Queen, and this whole state, in giving her Majesty hope of her long-desired issue, thereby filling their and our hearts with gladness. Lord, accompany your own blessings to perfect them. Be with her in soul and body, and preserve her from all dangers. Keep her safe during the hour of travel, so that she may have the strength to bring forth her joy and our hope. And make her a joyful mother of many children, to the glory of your great name, the happiness of his Majesty, the security of this state, and the flourishing of the Church and true religion among us. Grant this, even for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Lord and Savior. Amen. O Eternal God and merciful Father, since the line of succession is under you, the great security of kingdoms, and the very life of peace. We therefore give you our most humble and heartfelt thanks for the great blessing you have begun to work for our gracious King Charles and this whole state, by giving Her Majesty further hopes of a desired and happy child. And as we give you humble and hearty thanks for this, we pray you to perfect this great blessing that has begun, to preserve her from all dangers, and to be with her by special assistance in the hour of travel. Lord, make her a happy mother of successful children, to the increase of your glory, the comfort of His Majesty, the joy of her own heart, the safety of the state, and the preservation of the Church and true religion among us. Grant this, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our only Savior and Redeemer. Amen. O most merciful God and gracious Father, you have given our hearts joy and our souls contentment for this life by blessing our dear and revered Sovereign and his virtuous Royal Queen with a hopeful Son, and us with a Prince to rule over us in your perfect timing. We offer your glorious Name our most humble and heartfelt thanks for this. Lord, make us truly thankful and obedient to you for this great mercy, so that your goodness may delight in increasing it for us. Increase it to more children, the great support of one another against solitary hope. Increase it to more sons, the great strength of his Majesty and his Throne. Increase it in the joy of his Royal Parents and all true-hearted subjects. Increase it through his Christian and happy education in both faith and goodness, so that this Kingdom and its people may be happy in the long life and prosperity of our most gracious Sovereign and his Royal Consort. And when the fullness of days must gather time, Lord, double his graces and make them apparent in this his Heir and his heirs after him, for all generations to come, even for Jesus Christ's sake, our Lord and only Savior.
Thanksgiving for Royal Births
A prayer of thanks for the safe delivery of the Queen and the health of the royal children.
Amen. O most gracious God and loving Father, we give you, as we are bound, our most humble and heartfelt thanks for your great mercy extended to us and this whole State, in blessing the Queen's Majesty with a happy deliverance from the great pains and perils of childbirth. We humbly beseech you to continue and increase this blessing: to give her strength, that she may happily overcome this and all other dangers; that his most Gracious Majesty may long have joy in her happy life; that she may have joy in his Majesty's prosperity; that both of them may find comfort in the Royal Prince Charles, the new-born Princess the Lady Mary, and with them in a hopeful, healthful, and successful posterity; that the whole kingdom may have fullness of joy in them; and that both they and we may all have joy in the true honor and service of God; that both Church and Kingdom may be blessed, and their Royal Persons filled with honor in this life, and with eternal happiness in the life to come, even for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Lord and Savior. Amen.
For the King's Health and Victory
Prayers for the King's recovery from illness and success in suppressing rebellion.
O Eternal God and merciful Father, we offer you our humble and heartfelt thanks for our most Gracious Sovereign Lord King Charles, and for the gentleness of your hand during a disease that is otherwise so troublesome and fearful. And for the mercy of your hand in taking it away so soon and so happily. We know and acknowledge before you our sins, and the grievous punishments they have deserved. But Lord, we beseech you still to remember us in mercy, and long to bless our Gracious King with life and health, and strength, and happiness; and above all with the fear of your holy Name: that he may continue under you, and over us, a Father of the State, a Patron of the Church, a Comfort to his Royal Queen, until he sees his children's children, and peace upon Israel. Grant this, good Lord, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen. Most gracious God and loving Father, we give you all humble and heartfelt thanks for your great mercy in blessing the Queen's Majesty with a happy deliverance from the great pains and dangers of childbirth. We humbly beseech you to continue your mercies towards her, that she may happily overcome this and all other dangers; that his most gracious Majesty may long have joy in her most happy life, and both of them comfort in the Royal Prince Charles, and the rest of their princely issue; particularly in the newborn Prince, the Duke of York, that they all may prove a healthful, hopeful, and successful posterity; that both Church and Kingdom may have fullness of joy in them. May their Majesties be filled with honor in this life, and with eternal happiness in the life to come. And this even for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Savior and Redeemer. Amen. O Eternal God and merciful Father, by whom alone kings reign, you are the Lord of Hosts and the giver of all victory. We humbly ask you to guard our most gracious Sovereign Lord King Charles; bless him with health and safety, grant him wisdom and prudence in his counsel, and honor and success in all his actions. Grant, blessed Lord, that victory may attend his designs, and that his loyal people may rejoice in you; but let shame cover the faces of his treacherous enemies. Give him, blessed Father, the ability to settle his subjects in peace and in the true fear of your divine majesty, so that he may return with joy and honor, and continue to govern his kingdoms in peace and plenty, and in the happiness of true religion and piety all his days. We humbly ask these blessings, and whatever else may be necessary for him or for ourselves, of you, O merciful Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our only mediator and redeemer. Amen. O Eternal God and merciful Father, by whom alone kings reign, Lord of Hosts and Giver of all victory, we humbly ask you to guide and preserve our most gracious Sovereign Lord King Charles, both now and forever. Bless him with health and safety in his person; grant him wisdom and prudence in his counsels; and honor and success in all his actions, especially against those treacherous subjects who have cast off all obedience to their anointed sovereign and are now invading this realm in a rebellious manner. Grant, Blessed Lord, that victory may attend his Majesty's designs, that his loyal people may rejoice in you; but let shame cover the faces of his treacherous enemies. Enable him, blessed Father, to vanquish and subdue them all, so that his loyal subjects, settled in peace and the true fear of your holy name, may return with joy and honor, and continue to govern his kingdoms in peace and plenty, and in the happiness of true religion and piety all his days. We humbly ask you, O merciful Father, for these blessings and whatever else may be necessary for him or for ourselves, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Redeemer. Amen.

We are thy servants, truly and heartily sorry for our sins.

While the Pestilence eats up thy People, we hear the sound of War, and the Sword calleth for such as it would devour. O Eternal God and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech thee be merciful unto us, and be near to help us in all those extremities which our sins threaten to bring upon us. Our Enemies are strengthened against us, by our multiplied Rebellions against thee. And we deserve to suffer whatever our Enemies threaten. But there is mercy with thee that thou mayest be feared. Forgive us, O Lord, forgive us these and all other our grievous sins. Give us light in our understanding, readiness and obedience in our will, discretion in our words and actions; true, serious, and loyal endeavours for the peace and prosperity of Ierusalem, the unity and glory of this Church and State: that so we may love it and prosper in it, and be full of grace in this life, and filled with glory in the life to come, through Iesus Christ our Lord.
