A Cry for Restoration

The penitent cries out for God to turn back to them and restore their soul after a season of wandering.

O Lord, turn back to me now at last, and be gracious to your servant. Satisfy me with your mercy, and do it soon, so that I may rejoice and be glad all the days of my life. And when you have forgiven my sins, O comfort me again after the time you have afflicted me, and for the years in which I have suffered adversity, O Jesus Christ my Savior, be merciful. Amen. O Lord, my body trembles in fear of you, and I am afraid of your judgments; yet establish me according to your word, so that I may live, and let me not be disappointed in my hope, even for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen. I have gone astray like a lost sheep; O seek your servant, so I will not forget your commandments, but return to you. Amen.

The Indwelling Presence

A plea for God to dwell within the soul rather than remaining a distant stranger.

O Lord, our iniquities testify against us; for our backslidings are many, and we have sinned against you: yet, O you hope of Israel, you Savior in times of trouble, show mercy for your Name's sake; and especially on me. For why should you be like a stranger in my soul, or like a wayfaring man who turns aside to stay only for a night? O Lord, be and dwell within me, for your Name is called upon me. Do not leave me, O God of my salvation, but have mercy for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen. For the sake of your name, O Lord. Be merciful to my sin, for it is great. Amen.

Confession of Unworthiness

The believer acknowledges their own sinfulness while appealing to God's identity as Creator and Shepherd.

O Lord Almighty, I acknowledge and confess that I am not worthy to lift my eyes to heaven, much less to present myself before you with any confidence that you would hear my prayers and grant my requests, if I consider what I deserve. For my conscience accuses me, and my sins witness against me; and you are a just and upright Judge, and will not justify any sinner in his transgressions. O Lord, do not let me be swallowed up by death and desperation, but in the multitude of your mercies, pardon me, O Lord, for the sake of your goodness. For though I am a worm and no man, yet you are my Creator, and I am the work of your hands; yes, you are my Father, and I am your son: You are my Shepherd, and I am one of your straying flock: You are my Redeemer, and I am one of your people whom you have dearly bought: You are my God, and I am your creature. O Lord, do not correct me in your anger, nor punish me according to what I deserve, but remember my weakness as well as my sin, and have mercy upon me for the sake of my dearest Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayers for Contrition and Grace

A series of petitions asking God to create a contrite heart and grant the grace of true repentance.

Almighty and everlasting God, who hates nothing you have made and forgives the sins of all who are penitent, create in me a new and contrite heart, so that I may worthily lament my sins, acknowledge my wretchedness, and obtain from you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we are to pray, and you give more than we either desire or deserve. Pour out upon me, a most miserable sinner, the abundance of your mercy, forgiving me those things my conscience fears, and granting me what my prayer dares not presume to ask. Grant this for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord and only Savior. Amen. Grant, I ask you, merciful God, to pardon and give peace to me, your sinful but humble servant, so that I may be cleansed from all my sins and serve you with a quiet mind, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Lord, I ask you to free me from all my offenses, and by your generous goodness, deliver me from the grip of all those sins I have committed through my ignorance, weakness, or willfulness. Grant this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O merciful God, Father, you do not despise the sighing of a contrite heart or the longing of those who are sorrowful. Mercifully assist my prayers that I offer to you in all my troubles and adversities whenever they oppress me. Graciously hear me, so that those evils which the craft and subtlety of the devil or man work against me may be brought to nothing, and by your providence, may they be dispersed, so that I, your poor servant, am not overcome by any temptation or harmed by any persecution, and may I always give thanks to you in your holy Church, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O Lord, in your great goodness, I ask you to grant me true repentance and forgive me all my sins, neglects, and ignorance. Please fill me with the grace of your Holy Spirit so that I may amend my life according to your holy word, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O God, whose nature is always to have mercy and to forgive, hear my humble petitions. Even though I am tied and bound by the chain of my sins, let the greatness of your mercy set me free, and do this for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen. Hear my humble prayers, Lord, and be merciful to me, a sinner; grant me forgiveness and peace, through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Almighty God, who brought water from the rock, bring forth tears of compunction from the hardness of my heart; so that I may mourn for my sins and receive forgiveness through your mercy, by Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Final Vow of Repentance

The penitent makes a solemn commitment to turn away from past wickedness and live in newness of life.

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Creator of all things, and Judge of all people: I acknowledge and mourn my many sins and wickedness, which I have grievously committed time and again, by thought, word, and deed against your divine Majesty, provoking your just wrath and indignation against me. I earnestly repent and am deeply sorry for these misdoings; the memory of them is painful to me, and their burden is intolerable. Have mercy upon me, have mercy upon me, most merciful Father. For the sake of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive me all that is past, and grant that I may ever hereafter serve and please you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, my most merciful Father, who in your tender mercy have promised forgiveness of sins to all who turn to you with heartfelt repentance and true faith; have mercy on me, pardon and deliver me from all my sins, confirm and strengthen me in all goodness, and bring me to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Most merciful Lord, most compassionate God, may it be enough for me that I have sinned up to this point, that I have despised, that I have satisfied the foulness of my flesh; now, with your inspiration, I vow to turn away from my wickedness. Help me, Lord, and grant that I may fulfill this, in and through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Iesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men; I acknowledge and bewail my manifold sins and wickedness, which I have from time to time most grievously committed, by thought, word, and deed against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against me.
