A Plea for Mercy in Desolation
The petitioner cries out for divine mercy and forgiveness amidst personal sorrow and misery.
Lord, turn to me and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and in misery. The sorrows of my heart have grown larger; O bring me out of my troubles. Look upon my adversity and misery, and forgive me all my sins, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Rock of Refuge
The petitioner seeks God as a secure refuge and a high tower against surrounding oppression.
Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth, wherever you cast me, I will call on you when my heart is heavy. Set me upon the Rock that is higher than I, to be my hope and a strong tower against my oppressors. Amen.
Deliverance from the Deep Waters
A desperate prayer for rescue from overwhelming trials and the malice of enemies.
Save me, O God, for the waters have entered into my soul. I’m stuck fast in the deep mire where there’s no foothold; I’ve come into deep waters, and the streams run over me. Those who hate me for no reason outnumber the hairs on my head, and those who seek to destroy me without cause are powerful. Don’t let these floods drown me, don’t let the deep swallow me up, and don’t let the pit close its mouth over me. Hear me, O Lord, for your loving-kindness is great; turn to me according to the multitude of your tender mercies. Do not hide your face from your servant, for I am in trouble; draw near to my soul and redeem it, for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Comfort in Heaviness
A brief petition for comfort and strength when the soul feels as though it is melting away.
My soul is melting away from the heaviness; comfort me according to your word. Amen.
Patience and Delight in the Law
The petitioner asks for the grace of patience to remain faithful to God's commandments despite ongoing hardship.
O Lord, trouble and heaviness have taken hold of me; grant me patience, good Lord, so that despite all this, my delight may be in your Commandments. Amen.
