Infamia.

The Burden of Public Shame

A prayer for faithfulness and integrity despite the stinging reproach of neighbors and slanderers.

O Lord, my sins have made me a source of shame to my neighbors, and those around me laugh at me. O Lord, don’t let me be a byword among the people any longer. My confusion is always before me, and the shame of my face has covered me. The voice of the slanderer and blasphemer has overtaken me. And even though all this has come upon me, O Lord, don't let me forget you or act wrongly in your Covenant, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Plea for Divine Intervention

An appeal for God to silence the cruel and deceitful tongues of those who threaten the soul.

Destroy their tongues, O Lord, and divide them, for I have seen cruelty and strife in the City. But I will call upon you, O Lord, and you will save me. Amen. O Lord, send down from heaven and save me from the reproach of those who would swallow me up. Send out your mercy and truth, for my soul is among lions; I lie among the children of men who are set on fire, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. O deliver me, and I will magnify your name forever. Amen.

God as the Only Anchor

A confession of being misunderstood by the world, coupled with a final request for God to remember the suffering servant.

I have become a monster to many, but you are my sure trust. O, be my anchor forever. Amen. Lord, remember the insults your servant has endured, and how I carry the rebukes of so many people in my heart. O remember me. Amen.

O Lord, my sins have made me a rebuke to my neighbours, and to be laughed to scorn of them that are round about me. O suffer me not longer to be a by-word among the people. My confusion is daily before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me. The voice of the slanderer and blasphemer hath overtaken me. And though all this be come upon me, suffer me not, O Lord, to forget thee, or to behave my self frowardly in thy Covenant, through Iesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Destroy their tongues, O Lord, and divide them, for I have seen cruelty and strife in the City. But I will call upon thee, O Lord, and thou wilt save me. Amen.

O Lord, send down from heaven, and save me from the reproof of them that would swallow me. Send out thy mercy and truth, for my soul is among Lions, I lie among the children of men that are set on fire, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. O deliver me, and I shall magnifie thy Name for ever. Amen.

I am become a Monster to many, but thou art my sure trust. O be my Anchor for ever. Amen.

O remember, Lord, the rebuke that thy servant hath, and how I do bear in my bosom the rebukes of many people. O remember me. Amen.
