Visita XXII
The Beloved in the Sacrament
The soul seeks its beloved and finds him truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
The Bride of the sacred Song of Songs went looking for her beloved, and not finding him she went asking: "Have you seen him whom my soul loves?"✦ (Cant. 3:3). At that time, Jesus was not on earth; but now, if a soul that loves Jesus goes looking for him, it always finds him in the Most Holy Sacrament. The Venerable used to say1 Father2 Master Avila that among all sanctuaries he could neither find nor desire a more lovable sanctuary than a church where the Most Holy Sacrament.
A Prayer of Eucharistic Love
A heartfelt act of adoration and surrender to Jesus, who humbles himself in the Eucharist for our sake.
O infinite love of my God, worthy of infinite love! Oh, how could you, my Jesus, bring yourself to stoop so low that, to remain among us and unite yourself to our hearts, you humbled yourself even to hiding under the appearance of bread?3 O Incarnate Word, you have been supreme in humbling yourself, because you are supreme in loving. How can I not love you with my whole self, knowing how much you have done to win my love?4 I love you deeply, and so I put your good pleasure above every interest of mine, above every satisfaction of my own. My delight is to delight you, my Jesus, my God, my love, my all.5 Kindle in me a great hunger to remain continually in your sacramental presence, and to receive you and keep you company. I would be ungrateful if I didn't accept such a sweet and gracious invitation. Ah Lord, destroy in me every attachment to created things. You want that you alone, my Creator, be the mark of all my sighs, of all my loves.6 I love you, most lovable goodness of my God. I seek nothing from you but you yourself. I don't want my own contentment; I want your contentment, and that is enough for me. Accept, my Jesus, this good desire of a sinner who wants to love you. Help me with your grace: make me, a wretched slave of hell, from this day forward a happy slave of your love. — Giac.7 I love you, my Jesus, my good above every good.
Spiritual Communion
A formal invitation to unite the soul with Christ spiritually.

Refuge in the Mother of Mercy
A plea to the Blessed Virgin Mary to act as an advocate and mediatrix for the repentant sinner.
To Mary. Sweetest Lady and Mother of mine, I am a base rebel against your great Son; but repentant I come to your pity, so that you may obtain forgiveness for me. Don't tell me that you cannot, when Saint Bernard calls you the minister of forgiveness: Ministra propitiationis.8 It still falls to you to help those who are in danger, as Saint Ephrem calls you Opitulatrix periclitantium.9 My Lady, who is in greater danger than I? I have lost God: it is certain I have been condemned to hell; I do not know whether God has forgiven me yet; I can lose Him again. But you can obtain everything for me, and from you I hope for every good: forgiveness, perseverance, and paradise. I hope to be one of those in the kingdom of the blessed who will most praise your mercies, O Mary, when you save me through your intercession. I will sing the mercies of Mary forever; I will sing forever. Amen, amen. A prayer by William of Paris. O Mother of God, your kindness has never turned away any sinner, no matter how great their guilt, who has entrusted themselves to you. Does the Church, then, name you her Advocate, the refuge of the wretched, perhaps falsely or in vain? May it never be that my faults keep you from fulfilling the great office of mercy you hold, by which you make yourself the mediatrix of peace, the only hope, and the surest refuge of the wretched.10 May it never be that the Mother of God, who for the good of the whole world gave birth to the fountain of mercy, should refuse her compassion to any wretched soul who turns to her.11 Your office is to be the peacemaker between God and humanity.12 So let your great mercy, which is far greater than all my sins, move you to help me. My dear Mother, you are the one who must save me.13
Ah Signore, distruggete in me tutto l'affetto alle cose create. - Giac.
V'amo Gesù mio bene sopra ogni bene. La comunione spirituale.
A Maria. A voi ancora tocca l'aiutare chi sta in pericolo, chiamandovi S. Efrem: Opitulatrix periclitantium.
Misericordias Mariae in aeternum cantabo, in aeternum cantabo. Amen, amen.

Notes
- 1 ↩Italian "V." expanded as Venerabile (Venerable), a common honorific before John of Ávila's name.
- 2 ↩Italian "P." expanded as Padre (Father).
- 3 ↩Italian 'specie di pane' is the Eucharistic technical term for the sacramental species; rendered as 'appearances of bread' for modern readability while keeping sacramental sense.
- 4 ↩'cattivarvi il mio amore' is 'to captivate/win for yourself my love'; rendered as 'win my love' rather than harsher 'capture'.
- 5 ↩Italian plays on 'gusto'/'dar gusto'; rendered as 'delight'/'delight you' to keep the reciprocal wordplay in natural English.
- 6 ↩Italian segno can mean mark, aim, or target; rendered as 'mark' for the single end toward which sighs and loves are directed.
- 7 ↩Abbreviated Italian source tag or attribution (- Giac.); left unexpanded because the referent is not recoverable from the section alone.
- 8 ↩Latin title Ministra propitiationis is retained as in the source after the Italian gloss; propitiationis = of propitiation/atonement.
- 9 ↩Latin title Opitulatrix periclitantium is retained as in the source: helper of those in peril.
- 10 ↩mezzana di pace: rendered mediatrix of peace (female intermediary/peace-broker); not the later formal Marian title Mediatrix of all graces.
- 11 ↩il fonte della misericordia: Christ as the fountain/source of mercy; partorì = gave birth to.
- 12 ↩paciera: archaic Italian for a woman who makes peace / reconciles parties; rendered peacemaker.
- 13 ↩m'avete da salvare: duty/office idiom ('you have to save me' / 'it falls to you to save me'), not a claim that Mary saves apart from Christ.
