Capítulo 22. En que declara qué es oración mental.
The Union of Heart and Voice
Mental prayer is not defined by silence, but by the awareness of the One to whom we speak.
Know this, daughters: the absence of mental prayer isn't determined by whether your mouth is closed. If while speaking, I am fully understanding and seeing that I am talking to God with more awareness than in the words I say, then mental prayer and vocal prayer are together. Unless they tell you that you are speaking with God while praying the Our Father and thinking about the world; here I remain silent. But if you are to be speaking with such a great Lord, as is only reasonable, it's good to consider who you are speaking to and who you are, if only to speak with respect. After all, how can you call a king 'Your Highness,' or know the proper etiquette for speaking to someone of high rank, if you don't fully understand his status and your own? Reverence should be shown accordingly, and in keeping with custom, for it's necessary for you to know this as well. If not, they will send you to be simple and you will not negotiate anything. So what is this, my Lord? What is this, my Emperor? How can anyone endure this? You are the King, my God, without end; the kingdom you possess isn't borrowed. When in the Creed it says, 'Your kingdom has no end,' it is almost always a particular gift to me. I praise you, Lord, and bless you forever; truly, your kingdom will last forever. So may you, Lord, never allow it to be thought good that anyone who comes to speak with you does so only with their mouth.
The Necessity of Mental Prayer
Teresa corrects the error of separating vocal and mental prayer, urging sisters to prepare their hearts before speaking to God.
What is this, Christians, that you say mental prayer is unnecessary? Do you understand? Indeed, I think you don't understand, and so you want us all to go astray: you neither know what mental prayer is nor how to say vocal prayers, nor what contemplation is; because if you did, you wouldn't condemn one thing while praising another. I must always combine mental prayer with vocal prayer whenever I remember, so that you won’t be frightened, daughters; for I know what these things lead to, having gone through some struggles in this matter, and I wouldn’t want anyone to bring you to a state of unrest, as it is harmful to walk this path with fear. It’s very important to understand that you are on the right path, because telling a traveler who is lost that they are going the wrong way makes them wander from one end to the other, and everything they search for in trying to find their way only tires them out and wastes their time, causing them to arrive later. Who could say it’s wrong, when we begin praying the Hours or the rosary, to first consider who we are speaking to, who is speaking, and how we ought to treat them? So I tell you, sisters, that if we were to properly understand these two points, before you begin the vocal prayer you’re going to say, you should spend ample time on the mental prayer. We shouldn’t approach speaking to a prince with the same carelessness we might use with a laborer or a poor woman like ourselves, where however they speak to us, it’s fine.
The Humility of the King
God's humility in receiving our prayers should inspire our own reverence, contrasting His nature with the vanity of worldly status.
The reason is that, because of this King's humility, even if I don't know how to speak to Him like an ordinary person, He still hears me and lets me approach Him; His guards don't cast me out, because the angels there know the nature of their King well—He prefers the simple words of a humble shepherd who realizes that if he knew more, he would say more, over the elegant arguments of the very wise and learned, if they don't come with humility. So, just because He is good, we shouldn't be careless ourselves. At the very least, to thank Him for the bad smell He endures by allowing someone like me to approach, we should strive to understand His purity and who He is. It's true that it becomes clear right away when arriving—just as with local lords—that if they tell us who their father was and share stories about their wealth and titles, there's nothing more to know. Because here, people aren't valued for their worth, no matter how deserving they are, but rather for their wealth. Oh, miserable world! Praise God a lot, daughters, for you have left behind something so worthless, where they pay no attention to what they have in themselves, but only to what their tenants and vassals possess; and if they lack, then they lack the honor due to Him. It is a wonderful thing for you to take pleasure in when you have the opportunity for recreation, for it is a good pastime to understand how blindly people in the world spend their time.
The Spouse's Greatness
We must study the greatness of our Divine Spouse to understand the dignity of our betrothal to Him.
O our Emperor, supreme power, supreme goodness, the very wisdom, without beginning, without end, without limit in your works; they are infinite, beyond comprehension, a bottomless sea of wonders, a beauty that contains all beauties, the very strength! Oh, may God help me! Who could gather here all the eloquence of mortals and the wisdom to truly know—like we can know here, that all is to know nothing—so as to understand even a little of the many things we can consider to know something about who this Lord is and our good? Think carefully and understand, as you approach, who it is you are going to speak with or who you are speaking to. In a thousand lifetimes, we won't finish understanding how this Lord deserves to be treated, before whom the angels tremble. He commands everything, He can do everything; His will is to act. Therefore, daughters, it makes sense that we should delight in these greatnesses that our Spouse possesses and understand with whom we are married and what kind of life we should lead. Oh, God help me! When someone gets married here, they first find out who they are marrying, who that person is, and what they have. We, already betrothed, before the wedding, who are to be taken to His house, since here these thoughts do not leave those who are betrothed to men, why should they take away from us the desire to understand who this man is, who His Father is, what land this is to which He will take me, what goods He promises to give me, what condition He has, how I can please Him better, in what way I will bring Him joy, and to study how I will make my condition conform to His? For if a woman is to be well married, she is not warned of anything else but to pursue this, even if her husband is a very lowly man.
Living in the Presence of the Beloved
True mental prayer is the constant effort to align our hearts with the Spouse who dwells within us.
So, my Spouse, should they pay less attention to You than to men in everything? If they don’t think this is right, let them leave their wives, who are to live with You. It is truly a good life. If a husband is so jealous that he doesn’t want his wife to associate with anyone, how strange it is that he doesn’t think about how to please her and the reason he has for tolerating her and not wanting her to be with another, since in him she has everything she could desire! This is mental prayer, my daughters: to understand these truths. If you want to understand this and pray vocally, that’s wonderful. Don’t talk to God while thinking about other things, because that prevents you from understanding what mental prayer is. I believe it is given to understand. May we know how to act, Lord. Amen.
