A Response to the Church's Crisis
Teresa explains her motivation for founding the monastery as a spiritual response to the growth of heresy and the suffering of the Church.
At the beginning of the founding of this monastery (for the reasons I have written about in the book, along with some of the Lord's greatness, which made it clear that there was much to serve in this house), it was not my intention for there to be so much harshness in the exterior or for it to be without income; rather, I would have preferred there to be a possibility so that nothing would be lacking. In the end, feeling weak and insignificant; although I had some good intentions, they were more than my own gift. At that time, I learned about the damage done in France and the devastation caused by these Lutherans, and how much this unfortunate sect was growing. I felt great fatigue, and as if I could do something or was something, I cried out to the Lord and begged Him to remedy such great evil. It seemed to me that I would give a thousand lives to remedy one soul among the many that were being lost there. And as I saw myself as a woman, weak and unable to be of service to the Lord in what I desired, and all my longing was, and still is, that since He has so many enemies and so few friends, those few would be good, I determined to do that little which was in me, which is to follow the evangelical counsels with all the perfection I could and to encourage these few who are here to do the same, trusting in the great goodness of God, who never fails to help those who resolve to leave everything for Him; and that being such as I painted them in my desires, my faults would have no strength among their virtues, and I could please the Lord in some way, and that all, occupied in prayer for those who are defenders of the Church and preachers and learned men who defend it, would help in whatever way we could to this Lord of mine, who is so burdened by those whom He has done so much good for, that it seems they would now want to return Him to the cross, these traitors, and that He would have nowhere to lay His head.
The Sorrow of the Redeemer
Teresa laments the betrayal of Christ by those who should be His closest friends and expresses her grief over the loss of souls.
Oh my Redeemer, my heart can't reach here without getting very tired! What is happening among Christians today? Are those who owe You the most always the ones who burden You? To those who do the best works, to those you choose as your friends, among those you walk with and share the sacraments? Are they not tired of the torments You have endured for them? Truly, my Lord, those who turn away from the world now do nothing. For they have so little regard for You, what can we expect? Do we deserve any better treatment? Have we done any better works that would earn us their friendship? What is this? What do we expect—we who, by the Lord's goodness, are free from that pestilential filth, while those others belong to the devil? They have earned a good punishment by their actions and have well deserved eternal fire through their pleasures. Let them have it there! even though it breaks my heart to see so many souls being lost. But not so much about the evil: I wish I didn't have to see more souls lost every day.
A Call to Intercessory Prayer
Teresa exhorts her sisters to focus their prayers entirely on the needs of the Church rather than on worldly or trivial concerns.
Oh, my sisters in Christ! Help me to plead this before the Lord, for that is why He brought you together here; this is your calling, these are to be your concerns, these are to be your desires, here are your tears, these are your petitions; no, my sisters, not for worldly matters; for I laugh and even grieve at the things that come to us here to ask of God, to request from His Majesty rents and money, and some people that I wish would plead with God for all of them. They have good intentions and, in the end, it is done to see their devotion, although I have my doubts that in these matters they ever hear me. The world is burning, and they want to condemn Christ again, as they say, for they raise a thousand testimonies against Him and want to bring His Church to the ground. Are we to waste time on things that, if God were to grant them, would mean one less soul in heaven? No, my sisters, it is not the time to discuss matters of little importance with God. If we didn't consider human weakness—which comforts us by helping in everything, and it's good if we were something—we would better understand that these aren't the things we should be asking God for with such care.
