The Bishop's Discovery

A bishop discovers the transformative power of the Rosary through the witness of a devout countess and experiences a miraculous renewal in his diocese.

111. A Spanish countess, having been taught the devotion of the holy Rosary by Saint Dominic, prayed it every day and made marvelous progress in virtue. Since she lived only for perfection, she one day asked a prelate and famous preacher for some practices of perfection. The prelate told her she first needed to describe the state of her soul and her spiritual exercises; she told him that the most important was the Rosary, which she recited daily, meditating on the joyful, sorrowful, and glorious mysteries with great spiritual profit for her soul. The bishop, delighted to hear her explain the rare teachings enclosed in the mysteries, said to her: "I have been a doctor of theology for twenty years; I have read a great many excellent practices of devotion; but I have never known any more fruitful, or more in keeping with Christianity.1 I want to follow your example; I’m going to preach the Rosary." He did so with such happy success that before long he saw a very great change of morals in his diocese, many conversions, restitutions, and reconciliations; debauchery, gambling, and luxury ceased; peace in families, devotion, and charity began to flourish. It was a change all the more admirable because this bishop had worked hard to reform his diocese and had seen very little fruit.

The Rosary as an Episcopal Badge

The bishop publicly adopts the Rosary as a mark of his office, encouraging his flock to embrace the devotion.

To better encourage devotion to the Rosary, he wore a fine one at his side and showed it to his listeners. He would say: "Know, my brothers, that the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin is so excellent that I, who am your bishop, a doctor of theology and of both laws, glory in always wearing it as the most illustrious mark of my episcopacy and doctorate"» (Mystical Rosebush, 7th decade, ch.2 6).

Notes

  1. 1French rares can mean rare/precious as well as uncommon; rendered as rare teachings for the dense spiritual instruction in the mysteries.
  2. 2"en l'un et l'autre droit" is the traditional formula for doctor of both laws (canon and civil).
