The Vision of the Protected Nun
A young nun's devotion to the Rosary protects her from the spiritual decay of her monastery, as revealed in a vision to a visiting abbot.
110. A nobleman with several children placed one of his daughters in a completely disorderly monastery, where the nuns breathed nothing but vanity and pleasure. Her confessor, a man fervent and devoted to the holy Rosary, wanting first to lead this young nun into the practices of a better life, ordered her to recite the Rosary every day in honor of the Blessed Virgin, meditating on the life, Passion, and glory of Jesus Christ. She took to this devotion gladly; little by little she grew disgusted with her sisters' disorder. She began to love silence and prayer, despite the scorn and mockery of the others, who called her a bigot.1 Around that time, a holy abbot who had gone to make a visitation of this monastery had a strange vision in his prayer; it seemed to him that he saw a nun in her cell at prayer before a great lady of marvelous beauty, accompanied by a company of angels who, with strokes of flaming darts, were driving off a multitude of demons that wanted to enter. And those evil spirits fled to the cells of the other nuns under the form of filthy animals, to stir them up to the sin to which several of them opened the door. From this vision the abbot understood the wretched state of that monastery and thought he would die of sorrow; he sent for the young nun and urged her to persevere. Reflecting on the excellence of the Rosary, he resolved to reform these nuns through this devotion.
The Transformation of the Community
The abbot introduces the Rosary to the entire community, leading to a miraculous internal reform and conversion of the nuns.
He bought beautiful rosaries and gave them to all the nuns, urging them to pray the Rosary every day, and he promised that if they would willingly do so, he would never force them to reform. They gladly accepted these rosaries and promised to recite it on that condition. (A marvelous thing!) Little by little they left their vanities, turned toward silence and recollection, and in less than a year they all asked for reform. The Rosary worked more on their hearts than the abbot could have achieved through his exhortations and authority (Mystical Rosebush, 7th decade, ch.2 5).

110. «Un seigneur qui avait plusieurs enfants mit une de ses filles dans un monastère entièrement déréglé, où les religieuses ne respiraient que la vanité et les plaisirs. Le confesseur, homme fervent et dévot au saint Rosaire, désirant d'abord conduire cette jeune religieuse dans les pratiques d'une meilleure vie, lui ordonna de réciter tous les jours le Rosaire en l'honneur de la Sainte Vierge, méditant la vie, la passion et la gloire de Jésus-Christ. Elle agréa fort cette dévotion; peu à peu elle eut du dégoût du dérèglement de ses sœurs; elle commença à aimer le silence et l'oraison, malgré les mépris et les railleries des autres, qui la traitaient de bigote. En ce temps-là, un saint abbé, étant allé faire la visite dans ce monastère, eut une étrange vision, en son oraison; il lui sembla voir une religieuse dans sa chambre en oraison, devant une grande dame d'une beauté admirable, accompagnée d'une troupe d'anges, lesquels à coup de dards enflammés chassaient une multitude de démons qui voulaient entrer. Et ces esprits malins s'enfuyaient aux chambres des autres religieuses, sous la figure de sales animaux, pour les exciter au péché auquel plusieurs donnaient entrée. L'abbé connut, par cette vision, l'état malheureux de ce monastère et pensa mourir de tristesse; il fit venir la jeune religieuse et l'exhorta à la persévérance. En faisant réflexion sur l'excellence du Rosaire, il prit dessein de réformer ces religieuses par cette dévotion.
Il acheta de beaux rosaires qu'il donna à toutes les religieuses, les persuadant de le réciter tous les jours et leur promit, si elles voulaient bien le faire, de ne les contraindre jamais de se réformer. Elles reçurent agréablement ces rosaires et promirent de le réciter à cette condition. (Chose admirable!) Peu à peu elles quittèrent leurs vanités, se portèrent au silence et à la récollection, et en moins d'un an, elles demandèrent toutes la réforme. Le Rosaire opéra plus sur leurs cœurs que l'abbé n'aurait pu gagner par ses exhortations et son autorité» (Rosier mystique, 7ème dizaine, ch. 5).
