Chapter 4FilaretCat.1.4

The Two Testaments

The sacred books are divided into the Old and New Testaments, representing God's preparation for and fulfillment in the Savior.

When were the sacred books written? At different times. Some before the birth of Christ, and others after. Do these two divisions of the sacred books have special names? They do. Those sacred books that were written before the Nativity of Christ are called the books of the Old Testament; and those that were written after the Nativity of Christ are called the books of the New Testament. What are the Old and New Testaments? In other words, the ancient covenant of God with human beings and the new covenant of God with human beings.1 What did the Old Testament consist of? It consisted of this: God promised humanity a Divine Savior and prepared them to receive Him. How did God prepare people to receive the Savior? Through gradual revelations, prophecies, and prefigurations.2 What does the New Testament consist in? It consists of this: that God has truly given the Divine Savior, His only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to mankind.

The Old Testament Canon

The Church identifies the Old Testament books based on the Jewish enumeration and patristic tradition, distinguishing between canonical and instructional texts.

How many sacred books are in the Old Testament? Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, Saint Athanasius the Great, and Saint John of Damascus count them as twenty-two, following the way the Jews count them in their original language (see : Athanasius,3 Epistle4 39, on the Feasts5 ; John6 of Damascus,7 Theology8 bk. 4, ch. 17). Why is the Jews' enumeration worth paying attention to? Because, as the Apostle Paul says, the oracles of God were entrusted to them (Rom 3:2), and the New Testament Christian Church received the Old Testament sacred books from the Old Testament Jewish church.9 How, then, do Saint Cyril and Saint Athanasius list the books of the Old Testament? As follows: Genesis. Exodus. Leviticus. Numbers. Deuteronomy. Joshua. Judges, and along with it, as an appendix, the Book of Ruth. The First and Second Books of Kings, as two parts of one book. The Third and Fourth Books of Kings. The First and Second Books of Chronicles.10 The First Book of Ezra, and the Second by the same author, or, as it is titled in Greek, the Book of Nehemiah. Esther. The Book of Job. The Psalter. The Proverbs of Solomon. Ecclesiastes is also his. The Song of Songs is also his. The Book of the Prophet Isaiah. Jeremiah. Ezekiel. Daniel. The Twelve Prophets. Why is the Book of the Wisdom of the Son of Sirach, along with a few others, left out of this list of Old Testament books? Because they don't exist in the Hebrew language. How should these last books be received? Athanasius the Great says that the fathers appointed them to be read by those entering the Church.

Classifying the Old Testament

The Old Testament is categorized into legislative, historical, didactic, and prophetic books, each serving a specific role in the history of piety.

How can the books of the Old Testament be more clearly categorized? They can be divided into these four classes: the legislative books, which serve as the primary foundation of the Old Testament; the historical books, which focus primarily on the history of piety; the didactic books, which contain the teachings of piety;11 and the prophetic books, which contain prophecies or predictions about the future, especially regarding Jesus Christ. Which are the books of the Law? The five books written by Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Jesus Christ himself refers to these books as the Law of Moses (Luke 24:44). What does the Book of Genesis specifically contain? The account of the creation of the world and of man, and then the history and ordinances of piety in the earliest times of the human race.12 What do the other four books of Moses contain? The history of piety during the time of the prophet Moses, and the law given by God through him. What are the historical books of the Old Testament? The books of Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Kings, Chronicles, the books of Ezra, the book of Nehemiah, and Esther.13 Which are the instructional books?14 The Book of Job, the Psalter, and the books of Solomon. What should we especially note about the Psalter? Along with the teaching of godliness, it also contains indications of the history of that godliness and many prophecies about Christ the Savior.15 It's an excellent guide to prayer and the glorifying of God, which is why it's used without ceasing in the Church's divine services. Which are the prophetic books? The books of the prophets are Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and the twelve others.

The New Testament and the Gospel

The New Testament consists of the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles, and the Apocalypse, which together reveal the life and work of Christ.

How many books are in the New Testament? Twenty-seven. Are there also books of law among them—that is, books that primarily form the foundation of the New Testament?16 By this name we may justly call the Gospel, which is made up of the four books of the evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. What does the word Gospel mean? It's a Greek word meaning good tidings—that is, good news or joyful news. What good news do the books known as the Gospels proclaim? They proclaim the divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His coming to earth, His life on earth, His miraculous works and saving teaching, and finally His death on the Cross, His glorious Resurrection, and His Ascension into heaven. Why are these books called the Gospel? Because for human beings, there can be no better or more joyful news than the news of the Divine Savior and of eternal salvation. That is why the reading of the Gospel in Church is each time preceded and accompanied by the joyful exclamation: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee!17 Are there any historical books in the New Testament? Yes. Specifically, the Book of the Acts of the Holy Apostles. What does it recount? The descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, and the spread of the Christian Church through them. What is an apostle? This word means messenger. This is the name given to the chosen disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ, whom He sent to preach the Gospel. Which books of the New Testament are didactic?18 The seven Catholic Epistles: one from the Apostle James, two from Peter, three from John, and one from Jude; and the fourteen epistles from the Apostle Paul: to the Romans, two to the Corinthians, to the Galatians, to the Ephesians, to the Philippians, to the Colossians, two to the Thessalonians, two to Timothy, to Titus, to Philemon, and to the Hebrews.19 Are there any prophetic books in the New Testament? There is such a book: the Apocalypse. What does this word mean? From the Greek it means revelation. What does this book contain? A mysterious depiction of the future destiny of the Church of Christ and of the whole world.20

Reading and Recognizing the Word of God

Holy Scripture must be read with prayer and churchly interpretation, and its divine origin is confirmed by its inherent loftiness, prophecies, miracles, and transformative power.

What should we carefully observe when reading Holy Scripture? First, we should read it with reverence as the Word of God, and with prayer that we may understand it; second, we should read it with a pure intention, for our instruction in the faith and to move us to good works; third, we should understand it according to the interpretation of the Orthodox Church and the holy Fathers. When the Church presents the teaching of God's revelation and Holy Scripture to those who haven't known it, what signs does she offer to show that it is the true word of God? The signs are these: the loftiness of the teaching, which shows it couldn't have been invented by human reason. The purity of the teaching, which shows it came from the purest mind of God. Prophecies. Miracles. The powerful effect of this teaching on human hearts, which belongs to God's power alone. How are prophecies a mark of true revelation from God? We can explain this with an example. When the prophet Isaiah foretold the birth of Christ the Savior from a Virgin—something natural human reason could not even conceive—and when, several hundred years after that prophecy, our Lord Jesus Christ was born of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, then one cannot help but see that the prophecy was the Word of the all-knowing God, and that the fulfillment of the prophecy is the work of the almighty God. That is why the holy Evangelist Matthew, when describing the Nativity of Christ, cites Isaiah's prophecy: "All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: 'Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel,' which means, 'God with us'" (Matt.21 1:22–23). What are miracles? They are works that cannot be accomplished by human strength or skill, but only by the almighty power of God. For example, raising the dead. How do miracles serve as a mark of the true word of God? Anyone who performs true miracles acts by the power of God; therefore, they are pleasing to God and share in the Spirit of God. It is characteristic of such a person to speak only pure truth. And therefore when he speaks in the name of God, then through him, without doubt, the word of God is speaking. For this reason, our Lord Jesus Christ Himself acknowledges miracles as important testimony to His divine mission: "The works that the Father has given Me to accomplish—these very works that I do—bear witness about Me, that the Father has sent Me" (John 5:36). From what especially can we see the powerful working of Christian teaching? From this: that the twelve apostles, taken from among the poor, the unlearned, and people of low estate, by this teaching conquered and brought into subjection to Christ the strong, the wise, the rich, kings, and kingdoms.

Scripture echoes

  1. Luke.2.10-Luke.2.11And the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.' Luke.2.11 — For today a Savior has been born to you, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David.
  2. Isa.7.14Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: Look, the young woman will conceive and bear a son, and she will call his name Immanuel.

Notes

  1. 1Russian союз here is the catechetical sense of covenant (as in Old/New Covenant), not a political alliance; Завет in s1 is rendered Testament to match standard English Bible-book naming, while союз is rendered covenant for the definitional sense.
  2. 2Russian прообразования is the typological term often rendered “types” in older English; “prefigurations” keeps the sense of foreshadowing without archaic catechetical jargon.
  3. 3Russian abbreviation «Афанас.» expanded as Athanasius (Saint Athanasius the Great).
  4. 4Russian abbreviation «Посл.» (Epistle/Letter).
= о праздниках (on the feasts / festal letters), referring to Athanasius’s Festal Letter 39.
  6. 6Russian abbreviation «Иоан.» expanded as John (John of Damascus).
  7. 7Russian abbreviation «Дам.» = Дамаскин (of Damascus / Damascene).
  8. 8Russian abbreviation «Богосл.» = Богословие, i.e. John of Damascus’s dogmatic work (commonly known in English as the Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith / On the Orthodox Faith).
  9. 9Church Slavonic «словеса̀ бж҃їѧ» rendered as traditional English 'oracles of God' (Rom 3:2); a plainer alternative is 'the words of God'.
  10. 10Russian Паралипоменон is the traditional church-Slavic/Septuagint name (Paralipomenon); rendered as the familiar English book title Chronicles.
  11. 11Учительные is the traditional catechetical class name for the wisdom/teaching books; rendered 'didactic' to keep the four-class technical vocabulary clear (cf. legislative / historical / prophetic).
  12. 12Russian «установления благочестия» rendered as «ordinances of piety»; could also be «institutions» or «establishments of piety», meaning the ordered practices of godliness in the earliest human generations.
  13. 13Russian «Царств» and «Паралипоменон» follow the traditional Orthodox titles (Kings / Paralipomenon); rendered with the familiar English names Kings and Chronicles. «книги Ездры» is plural in the source and is kept as “the books of Ezra.”
  14. 14Russian учительные (книги) names the Old Testament didactic/wisdom books in the traditional Orthodox classification (after the historical books in §19).
  15. 15«оного» is taken to refer to «благочестия» (godliness/piety): the Psalter points to the history of godliness, not merely abstract doctrine.
  16. 16Russian законоположительные is the catechetical term for books that set forth the law/foundation of the covenant; rendered here as law-giving, parallel to the OT legislative books.
  17. 17The liturgical acclamation is Church Slavonic Rendered in the traditional English form used in Orthodox worship rather than modernized pronouns, to preserve its solemn liturgical character.
  18. 18Russian учительные names the catechetical class of instructional/teaching books of the New Testament (as distinct from historical and prophetic). 'Didactic' preserves that traditional classification; 'teaching' or 'instructional' would also be faithful.
  19. 19Соборных посланий is rendered as Catholic Epistles, the traditional designation for the General Epistles of James, Peter, John, and Jude. 'Catholic' here means general/universal, not the later confessional sense.
  20. 20Таинственное изображение: rendered 'mysterious depiction' for modern readability; 'mystical portrayal' is also possible in a more technical Orthodox register.
  21. 21The Church Slavonic Gospel quotation is rendered in contemporary English with the familiar biblical cadence of Matthew 1:22–23; final scriptural form awaits Moses-resolution stage.
