The Tripartite Foundation of Christian Life
The catechism is structured around the three theological virtues of faith, hope, and love as the essential pillars of the Christian life.
How should the catechetical teaching of piety be set out in its proper order? For this, following the example of the book called the Orthodox Confession, approved by the Orthodox Eastern patriarchs, we may take as our foundation the saying of the Apostle Paul that a Christian’s whole occupation in this present life should consist of these three: faith, hope, and love.1 And now faith, hope, and love remain, these three (1 Cor 13:13).✦2 Therefore, a Christian needs: first, teaching about faith in God and in the Sacraments He reveals; second, teaching about hope in God and the ways to be established in that hope; and third, teaching about love for God and for everything He commands us to love.3
The Guides for Faith, Hope, and Love
The Church provides specific instruments—the Creed, the Beatitudes and Lord's Prayer, and the Ten Commandments—to guide the believer in faith, hope, and love.
How does the Church introduce us to the teaching on faith? Through the Symbol of Faith.4 What can we take as a guide for the teaching on hope? The Lord's teachings on blessedness and the Lord's Prayer.5 Where can the elementary teaching on love be found? In the Ten Commandments of the Law of God.

Scripture echoes
- ↩1Cor.13.13 — And now faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Notes
- 1 ↩«Православного исповедания» is the Orthodox Confession (Peter Mogila), approved by the Eastern patriarchs.
- 2 ↩Source is Church Slavonic Scripture; English keeps the cited triad and the parenthetical reference as printed, without adding the unquoted clause about the greatest of these.
- 3 ↩Таинства rendered as Sacraments (Orthodox Holy Mysteries); capital S marks the revealed mysteries of the Church, not a generic ritual sense.
- 4 ↩Символ веры is the traditional Orthodox name for the Creed (the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed); rendered as 'Symbol of Faith' to keep the catechetical term.
- 5 ↩«Изречения Господни о блаженстве» refers to the Beatitudes; rendered as 'sayings on blessedness' to stay close to the Russian wording.

Rule yourself daily, not just on retreat
Chosen Portion turns the mirror into a daily practice — a short reading and examining question each morning before you lead anyone.
Chosen Portion makes the mirror daily: the ruler-formation questions this collection preserves become a two-minute morning examination in the app.
- A daily formation reading drawn from centuries of counsel to those in authority
- One pointed examination question a day — two minutes, before the meetings start
- Track your practice over weeks and watch the examined life become a habit
