The Two Pillars of Revelation
Divine revelation is preserved in the Church through the dual witness of Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture.
How is divine revelation spread among people and preserved in the true Church? In two ways: through Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture. What is meant by the name Sacred Tradition? Sacred Tradition refers to the way true believers who honor God pass on the teaching of the faith, the law of God, the Sacraments, and the sacred rites to one another—and from ancestors to their descendants—through their words and their example. Is there a sure repository of Sacred Tradition? All true believers, united by the Sacred Tradition of the faith, together and in succession, according to God's plan, make up the Church. The Church itself is the reliable repository of Sacred Tradition—or, as the Apostle Paul puts it, the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth (1 Tim 3:15).✦ Saint Irenaeus writes: You shouldn't look elsewhere for the truth that is easily found in the Church. For into her, as into a rich treasury, the apostles fully deposited everything that belongs to the truth, so that anyone who wishes may receive from her the drink of life (Against1 Heresies , Book 3, Chapter 4).
The Nature of Holy Scripture
Holy Scripture, or the Bible, consists of books written by prophets and apostles under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
What is called Holy Scripture? The books written by the Spirit of God through people sanctified by God, who are called prophets and apostles. These books are commonly called the Bible. What does the word Bible mean? The word Bible comes from Greek. It means books. This name expresses that the sacred books are, above all others, especially worthy of attention.
The Priority and Purpose of Tradition
Sacred Tradition is the original form of revelation, while Scripture was provided later to ensure the accurate preservation of the faith.
Which is older, Sacred Tradition or Sacred Scripture? Sacred Tradition is the oldest and original way of spreading God's revelation. From Adam to Moses, there were no sacred books. Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself passed on His divine teaching and ordinances to His disciples by word and example, rather than by a book.2 The apostles initially spread the faith and established Christ's Church in the same way. The necessity of Tradition is also clear from this: books can only be used by a small number of people, while Tradition is available to everyone. Why, then, was Holy Scripture given? So that God's revelation might be preserved more accurately and without change. In Holy Scripture we read the words of the prophets and apostles just as if we had lived with them and heard them, even though the sacred books were written several centuries and millennia before our time.
The Necessity of Living Tradition
Sacred Tradition remains essential for the correct understanding of Scripture and the proper celebration of the Church's sacramental life.
Must we still observe Sacred Tradition even though we have Sacred Scripture? We must observe Tradition that aligns with divine revelation and Sacred Scripture, just as Sacred Scripture itself teaches. The Apostle Paul writes: 'Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught, whether by word or by our letter' (2 Thess. 2:15).✦3 Why is tradition still necessary today? To guide us into a right understanding of Holy Scripture, for the right performance of the Sacraments, and for keeping the sacred rites in the purity of their original institution. Saint Basil the Great says this about it: Of the dogmas and teachings preserved in the Church, some we have from written instruction, while others we have received from apostolic tradition, handed down in mystery by succession.4 Both have the same force for piety, and no one with even a little knowledge of the Church's ordinances would contradict this. If we dare to reject unwritten customs as if they were unimportant, we will, without noticing it, damage the Gospel in its most essential parts—or rather, leave behind only an empty name for the apostolic preaching. For example, let us mention first of all the first and most general point: that those who put their hope in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ should mark themselves with the sign of the cross—who taught that by writing? What Scripture taught us to turn toward the east in prayer? The words of invocation at the change of the Eucharistic bread and the Cup of blessing—which of the saints left those to us in writing?✦5 For we are not content with the words the apostle or the Gospel mentions, but before them and after them we also speak others that have great power for the Sacrament, having received them from unwritten teaching. And by what Scripture do we bless the water of baptism, the oil of anointing, and even the person being baptized? Isn't it according to silent and secret Tradition?6 What else? What written word taught us about the anointing with oil itself? And where does the threefold immersion of a person come from? And the rest of what belongs to baptism—renouncing Satan and his angels—from what Scripture is it taken? Isn't it from this unpublished and unspoken teaching that our fathers kept in a silence closed to curiosity and prying inquiry, having been thoroughly taught to guard the holiness of the Sacraments by silence?7 What sense would it make to write down and publish teachings about things that the unbaptized aren't even allowed to see? (Prav.8 97, On the Holy Spirit, ch. 27).
