AICI VĂZURĂ TOȚI ISRAILITŒNII JUDECATA LUI SOLOMON ȘI SĂ TEMURĂ DE DÂNSUL ȘI PRICEPURĂ CĂ LĂCUIAȘTE ÎNTR-ÎNSUL ÎNȚELEPCIUNEA LUI DUMNEZEU

Solomon's Wisdom and Israel's Awe

The Israelites were awestruck by Solomon's judgment, recognizing God's wisdom in him.

When all the Israelites heard about the judgment King Solomon had delivered, they were filled with awe before him. They understood that God’s wisdom was in him, enabling him to render just decisions.1

Solomon's Downfall Through Foreign Wives

Solomon's love for foreign wives led him into idolatry and away from God, unlike his father David.

Now Solomon loved his wives dearly, and he took wives for himself from foreign nations — Pharaoh's daughter, and women from the nation of Moab, and of Edom, and of Assyria, and of the Hittites, and of the Ammonites — the very nations and peoples about whom God had commanded the Israelites: "They shall not take wives for themselves from those nations, nor shall their women take husbands from those peoples, so that they do not turn your souls toward their idols."✦✦2 And Solomon gave himself over with them to great sexual immorality and to every kind of uncleanness. So when Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart away from the God of Israel toward their own gods so completely that his heart was no longer with God at all; instead he kept going after their defiled and rotten practices and sacrifices.✦ And so Solomon committed great sin and treachery in God's sight, and he did not walk according to the Lord's will, as his father David had walked.✦3

Scripture echoes

  1. ↩1Kgs.11.1-1Kgs.11.2 — Now King Solomon loved many foreign women — along with the daughter of Pharaoh — Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women. 1Kgs.11.2 — from the nations that the LORD said to the sons of Israel, 'You shall not go in among them, and they shall not come in among you; surely they will turn your heart after their gods'—Solomon clung to them in love.
  2. ↩Deut.7.3-Deut.7.4 — Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughter to his son, and do not take his daughter for your son. Deut.7.4 — For he will turn your son away from following me, and they will serve other gods; and the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and he will destroy you quickly.
  3. ↩1Kgs.11.4 — And it came about, in the time of Solomon's old age, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not wholly devoted to the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.
  4. ↩1Kgs.11.6 — And Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and he did not follow the LORD fully, as David his father had done.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩"se temură de fața lui foarte" is literally "they feared his face greatly"; rendered as "were filled with awe before him" to keep the biblical sense of reverent fear rather than mere terror, matching 1 Kings 3:28.
  2. 2 ↩The forms "Idumei," "Hetthei," and "Amethan" render the Old Romanian names for the Edomites (Idumeans), Hittites, and — most plausibly — the Ammonites; the last is uncertain in the source spelling.
  3. 3 ↩"Ficleșug" covers deceit, treachery, and faithlessness; "treachery" is chosen here because the offense is covenant-breaking toward God rather than mere trickery.
