JUDECATA CEA DINTÂI A LUI SOLOMON

The Plea for Justice

Two women bring a dispute before King Solomon, with one accusing the other of stealing her living child and replacing it with a dead one.

Then two prostitutes came to King Solomon and stood before him, and one of them said: "Give me justice, my king! This woman, my neighbor, and I were living together in the same house. Now, I gave birth to a child. And three days later, this neighbor of mine also gave birth, and she too had a boy.1 And it was just the two of us—no one else was in the house with us. But during the night, this neighbor rolled onto her own child in her sleep and smothered him. So when she woke up around midnight and found that she had lain on her child and he was dead, she picked him up and came over to me, and finding me asleep she took my living child from my side and laid him down beside her, and put her dead one next to me. Then, when I got up to nurse my child, I found him dead.2

The King's Test

Solomon proposes to divide the living child in two, prompting the true mother to relinquish her claim out of compassion, revealing her identity.

But the next morning, when it got light, I looked and saw that the dead child wasn't mine—he was this neighbor's; and this living child, this one is mine, and I'm the one who gave birth to him. But the other woman said, “No, my king, that’s not how it is. This living child is mine, and the dead one is hers.” And so the two of them argued it out in front of the king. Then Solomon said to them, “You say this living child is yours and the dead one is hers, and she says the dead one is yours and this living one is hers. So there’s no other way to settle it: this living child must be split into two pieces, and the dead one the same, and half of the living child and half of this dead one given to you—and the same to the other woman.”3 Then the woman whose child was the living one said, “Oh, my king, my heart is breaking for my child and for this judgment! Don’t let me watch my own child cut in two with my own eyes—give him alive to this neighbor of mine and let her keep him, only don’t kill him.”

The True Mother Recognized

Solomon declares the child belongs to the woman who pleaded for its life, recognizing her as the true mother.

But the other woman said, "No—better that he belong to neither me nor you. Let him be cut in two, just as the king said."4 Then Solomon said, "Don't kill him. Give him to the woman who said not to kill him, and don't give him to the other one, because the living child is hers and not the other woman's. So give him to her, because she is the child's mother and she is the one who gave birth to him."

Notes

  1. 1 ↩The phrase reads literally "again a child"; taken here as "another boy as well," matching the biblical account in which both women bear sons.
  2. 2 ↩The old idiom a apleca (un copil) means to give a child the breast; rendered "to nurse my child."
  3. 3 ↩'lospaturițe' is a rare diminutive, apparently 'small pieces/slices'; rendered 'pieces' since the sense required is simply the halving of the body.
  4. 4 ↩Old Romanian «încai» is a concessive particle meaning roughly "at least" or "rather then"; rendered here as "better that" to carry the speaker's spiteful preference without archaic diction.
