Ș-ALTĂ PILDĂ CU PORUMBUL

The Dove's Vigilance

The dove is presented as a model of vigilance, carefully watching for danger before consuming its food.

The dove is a better and more blameless bird than all the others.✦1 And when it goes out to feed and picks up a grain in its beak, it doesn't swallow it; instead it holds the grain in its beak and keeps watch and looks around, in case the hawk should swoop down on it and seize it.✦2 Then, once it sees that the hawk isn't above it, it swallows the grain.

Learn from the Dove: Watch for Death

The reader is urged to emulate the dove's watchfulness, applying it to the constant threat of death and avoiding idle talk.

Look: this creature is only a bird, and yet you can see how it stands guard and keeps watch, so that it won't be taken before its time.3 You should do the same, my brothers and my sons: take the lesson of this dove, learn from it, open your eyes, and see that the hawk is coming — that is, the hour of death. And when you sit down at table and enjoy yourselves with food and drink, don't spend it on empty talk and words that come to nothing; keep watch instead, and get yourselves ready, because you don't know what hour death will come.✦✦ So let your thoughts and your reflections rest on God at all times; strengthen yourselves with the words of God, and stand guard the way the dove stands guard against the hawk's hunting. Because what the hawk is to doves, the hour of death is to us.

Scripture echoes

  1. ↩Matt.10.16 — Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves; therefore be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
  2. ↩1Pet.5.8 — Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
  3. ↩Matt.24.42 — Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
  4. ↩Matt.12.36 — But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they will give an account for it on the day of judgment.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩"Porumbul" here is the dove/pigeon (the prey of the hawk in the rest of the chapter), not maize. "Întreagă" carries the sense of whole, sound, undivided — hence "blameless" rather than merely "intact".
  2. 2 ↩"ci" is adversative — the point is not simply that the dove waits but that it refuses to swallow; rendered "instead" to keep that contrastive force.
  3. 3 ↩"să nu piiae" (piară) is literally "perish"; the sense in context is being seized by the hawk, so "be taken" preserves both the death and the predation image.
