AICI AU VENIT SENAHERIM ÎMPĂRATUL ASIRIEI LA IERUSALIM SĂ-L IA, IAR ÎNGERUL LUI DUMNEZEU OMORÎ NUMAI ÎNTR-O NOAPTE 185.000 DE OAMENI DEN TABĂRA ASIRIIANILOR
Divine Judgment on Arrogance
The Assyrian army is struck down by an angel, and King Sennacherib is assassinated by his own sons.
And that night the angel of God came down and struck down, out of the Assyrian camp, a hundred and eighty-five thousand fighting men.1 And the rest of them, all who were left, got up in the morning and found every one of these men dead. And from there they turned around and started back. And King Sennacherib went from there to Nineveh. And there, while he was bowing in worship in the house of Mesarah, his god, his own sons, Adrammelech and Sharezer, came in and cut him down on the spot.2 Then they fled into Armenia, and his son Esarhaddon became king in his place.
The Example of Hezekiah's Prayer
The text contrasts the downfall of the proud with the mercy shown to those who fear God, highlighting Hezekiah's prayer and trust in the Lord.
See, my son, how the proud man who lifts himself up to heaven falls all the way down to hell! For he said to the Hebrews: “Hear the word of the king of Assyria. This is what the king of Assyria says: don't let Hezekiah fool you, because in the end he won't be able to pull you out of my hands; and don't let your king Hezekiah put his hope in God, saying, ‘God will rescue us, and he won't hand us or our city over into the hands of the king of Assyria.'"3 ”4 And now look again at those who pleased God well and did his will day and night, and see how great and how abundant God's mercy is toward them. For the prophet David says: “The Lord listens to the prayers of those who fear him, and he will do what they desire; he will save them quickly, and the Lord will keep watch over those who love him, because their mouths will speak God's praise forever. But the sinners, and those who set themselves up against God's greatness and glory, he will destroy.”5 But when Hezekiah took the letters from the hand of King Sennacherib's messenger, he went into the house of God and spat on those letters of King Sennacherib in God's presence, and said: “Lord, God of Israel, you who are enthroned upon the cherubim, you alone are the God of all the kings on earth; you made heaven and earth!6 Turn your ear to me, Lord, and hear me; open your eyes and look, and listen to what Sennacherib has said. For he has sent messengers and hurled insults at the living God.7 For it is true, Lord: the Assyrians have conquered other nations and ground them down, and they have thrown their gods into the fire — because those were not gods at all, but things made by human hands, shaped out of stone and wood. That is why they were able to destroy them and burn them. But you, Lord our God, save us now from his hand, and every kingdom on earth will know that you alone are Lord and God."8
God's Faithfulness to the Faithful
The angel of God strikes down the remaining Assyrian soldiers, and Sennacherib retreats in shame.
And then, see: the angel of God came down into the Assyrian camp and struck down 185,9 000 fighting men. And when the others who were left got up in the morning, they found that whole host of men lying dead. So Sennacherib turned back, covered in shame and disgrace.
A Father's Counsel to His Son
The father advises his son to emulate King Hezekiah's faithfulness to ensure God's constant help.
In the same way, my beloved son, if you pattern yourself after King Hezekiah in everything you do, God will always be with you and will help you in all things, just as he helped King Hezekiah.1011

Notes
- 1 ↩The printed numeral 185.000 (Romanian punctuation for 185,000) was broken across two sentence units by the segmenter. The number is rendered continuously across s1 and s2; 'de oameni ostași' means 'fighting men / soldiers'.
- 2 ↩The text names the idol 'Mesarah'; in the biblical account (2 Kings 19:37 / Isaiah 37:38) Sennacherib is killed while worshiping in the temple of Nisroch. The Romanian form is kept as it stands rather than silently corrected to Nisroch.
- 3 ↩The source runs the Rabshakeh's speech and the quoted words of Hezekiah together and ends with a question mark and an unclosed inner quotation. Translated as a single nested quotation with the taunt's declarative force retained.
- 4 ↩This sentence unit contains only the closing quotation mark and a period belonging to the speech in s2; there is no translatable text.
- 5 ↩"să potrivescu" here carries the sense of matching oneself against, i.e. rivaling God's majesty rather than merely resembling it; rendered "set themselves up against."
- 6 ↩"bisérica lui Dumnezeu" is rendered "the house of God" because the Jerusalem Temple is meant, not a church building.
- 7 ↩Romanian "împută" here carries the sense of reproaching or reviling rather than merely blaming; the object is God himself, so the stronger "hurled insults at" preserves the force of Hezekiah's prayer.
- 8 ↩The source has no explicit object for "mântuiaște" ("save now from his hands"); "us" is supplied from the prayer's context, following the biblical parallel.
- 9 ↩The numeral 185,000 is split across two sentence units by the segmentation (the period inside "185.000" was read as a sentence break). The full sense is "struck down 185,000 fighting men"; the split is preserved to keep the ref mapping intact.
- 10 ↩"Așijderea" opens the sentence as an applicative link back to the Hezekiah narrative of the previous section; rendered "In the same way" to keep the exemplum-to-instruction force. "de te vei asemăna" is conditional ("if you make yourself like"), not temporal.
- 11 ↩"și-ți va fi ajutor întru toate, ca și acestui Ezechie împărat" is literally "and he will be a help to you in all things, as also to this King Hezekiah"; the comparison governs the help God gave Hezekiah, so it is rendered "just as he helped this King Hezekiah."
