The Necessity of Constant Vigilance
The spiritual life is a lifelong battle against persistent passions and enemies that allow for no truce.
Among the things this spiritual combat requires is perseverance: we must continually work to put our passions to death, because in this life they never die but keep springing up every hour like weeds. And because this battle only ends when life does, we can't avoid it; anyone who refuses to fight is bound to be captured or to perish in the struggle. Besides, we’re dealing with enemies who continually hate us; therefore, we can never hope for peace or a truce with them, because the more someone tries to befriend them, the more cruelly they kill that person.
Victory Through Divine Strength
Though the enemy is formidable, victory is guaranteed to those who trust in the power and goodness of the Lord.
Still, you shouldn't be frightened by their power or their numbers, because in this battle no one can be defeated unless they choose to be. And all the strength of our enemies is in the hands of the Commander in whose honor we must fight. He won't just keep them from overcoming you; he'll take up arms for you. Because he is more powerful than all your adversaries, he will place victory in your hands if you fight courageously at his side and put your trust not in yourself, but in his power and goodness. If the Lord doesn't grant you victory right away, don't lose heart. In fact, you should be completely certain of one thing—which will help you fight with confidence: if you act as a faithful and courageous warrior, he will turn everything you encounter to your benefit and advantage, even those things that seem most remote from, or actually opposed to, your victory, whatever they may be.
Following the Heavenly Captain
We must imitate Christ's victory by courageously rooting out every remaining enemy within ourselves.
So, daughter, follow your heavenly Captain, who conquered the world for you and gave himself up to death. Take up this battle with a courageous heart and work for the complete destruction of all your enemies; if you left even one of them alive, it would be like a splinter in your eye and a spear in your side, and it would keep you from reaching such a glorious victory.

Fra le altre cose richieste in questo combattimento, una è la perseveranza con la quale dobbiamo attendere a mortificare sempre le nostre passioni che in questa vita non muoiono mai, anzi germogliano ogni ora come erba cattiva. E questa è battaglia che siccome non finisce se non con la vita, così non può essere da noi evitata; e chiunque in essa si rifiuta di combattere, necessariamente o viene preso oppure vi perisce.
Oltre a ciò si ha da fare con nemici che ci portano odio continuo: perciò non se ne può giammai sperare pace né tregua, poiché uccidono più crudelmente chi più cerca di farsi loro amico.
Non ti devi però spaventare per la loro potenza e per il loro numero, perché in questa battaglia non può essere superato se non chi vuole. E tutta la forza dei nostri nemici sta in mano al Capitano, in onore del quale dobbiamo combattere. Non solo egli non permetterà che essi prevalgano su di te, ma prenderà anche le armi per te; ed essendo più potente di tutti i tuoi avversari, ti darà la vittoria in mano se tu, combattendo virilmente insieme a lui, confiderai non in te ma nella sua potenza e nella sua bontà.
Se il Signore non ti concedesse così presto la palma, non ti perdere d'animo Infatti devi essere più certa di una cosa e questo ti gioverà anche per combattere fiduciosamente: se ti comporterai da fedele e generosa guerriera, egli trasformerà in tuo beneficio e in tuo vantaggio tutte le cose che ti si faranno incontro e quelle che più ti sembreranno lontane anzi contrarie alla tua vittoria, di qualunque genere siano.
Tu dunque, figliuola, seguendo il tuo celeste Capitano che per te ha vinto il mondo e ha consegnato se stesso alla morte, attendi con magnanimo cuore a questa battaglia e alla totale distruzione di tutti i tuoi nemici: se ne lasciassi vivo anche uno solo, ti sarebbe come fuscello negli occhi e lancia nei fianchi e ti impedirebbe il corso di così gloriosa vittoria.
