L'orazione sotto forma di meditazione
Meditative Prayer on the Passion
The author instructs the reader to integrate meditation on the Passion of Christ into their prayer life, using the scourging as a specific example.
If you want to pray for a while, say for half an hour or a full hour or more, you should add meditation on the life and passion of Jesus Christ to your prayer, always applying His actions to the virtue you desire. So, if you desire to obtain the grace of the virtue of patience, you should take as an example to meditate on some points of the mystery of the scourging. First. Just as, following Pilate's order, the Lord was dragged away by wicked men with shouts and mockery to the place appointed for his scourging. Second. They stripped him with hasty anger, leaving his pure flesh completely exposed and bare. Third. As his innocent hands, bound with a rough rope, were tied to the column. Fourth. Consider how His body was completely torn and shredded by the whips, causing streams of His divine blood to pour down to the ground. Fifth. As blows were struck repeatedly in the same spot, the existing wounds became increasingly aggravated.
Applying the Passion to Virtue
The reader is guided to internalize the suffering of Christ and petition the Father for the grace of patience.
So, once you've set these or similar points for meditation to help you gain patience, first focus your senses on feeling as vividly as possible the bitter anguish and sharp pain your dear Lord endured in every part of His most sacred body, and in His body as a whole. Then you'll move on to His most holy soul, penetrating as deeply as you can into the patience and gentleness with which He bore so many afflictions, never satisfying the hunger to suffer, in honor of the Father and for our benefit, with greater and more terrible torments. Contemplate Him, then, ignited by a lively desire that you want to bear your suffering, or see how He, still turned to the Father, prays for you that He may grant you the grace to bear patiently the cross that torments you now, and any other. Therefore, you, bending your will repeatedly to want to endure everything with a patient heart, then turn your mind to the Father; and thanking Him for having sent His only Son into the world to bear so many harsh torments and to pray for you, then ask Him for the virtue of patience through the works and prayers of His Son.
