Christian Worship in Contrast to Jewish Rejection

A series of antitheses contrasting Jewish rejection of Christ with Christian worship—blessing, bowing, drinking from his side, offering our lives, proclaiming the resurrection, and confessing him as Lord—culminating in a prayer for guidance in God's commandments.

And we do not revile as Jews do, but bless as Christians do; We do not take counsel to crucify him, but to bow down before the Crucified One;✦✦ We do not crucify the Savior; we raise our hands to him.✦ We do not pierce his side; instead, we drink from it the fountain of incorruption.1 We do not take thirty pieces of silver for him; instead we commit to him “one another and our whole life.”2 We do not hide the resurrection, but in all our houses we cry out: “Christ is risen from the dead.”✦ We do not say that he was stolen, but that he ascended to where he had been. We do not disbelieve, but like Peter we say to him: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God"; with Thomas: "You are our Lord and God"; with the thief: "Remember us, Lord, in your kingdom."3 And so, believing in him and holding to the tradition of the holy fathers of the seven councils, we pray God again and again to help us and guide us onto the path of his commandments!

Fulfillment of Prophecy Among the Nations

A catena of Old Testament prophecies from Isaiah, Psalms, and Daniel foretelling that all nations will worship God, receive salvation, and praise His name, demonstrating the fulfillment of God's plan for the gentiles.

And what was said about us, the nations, has been fulfilled: "The Lord will bare His holy arm before all the nations, and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation that comes from our God."✦ And another: "As I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow to me, and every tongue will confess to God";✦ and Isaiah's: "Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be brought low, and the crooked will become straight, and the rough places will become smooth paths, and the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all flesh will see the salvation of our God";✦ and in Daniel: “All peoples, tribes, and nations will serve him”; And David: "Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! Let the nations be glad and rejoice!" ;4 And: "All you nations, clap your hands and shout to God with a voice of joy, for the Lord Most High is awesome, a great King over all the earth"; and a little later: «Sing to our God, sing; sing to our King, sing, for God is King of all the earth; sing with understanding. God has reigned over the nations»; and: "Let all the earth bow down to you and sing to you; let it sing to your name, O Most High"; and: "Praise the Lord, all nations, and praise him, all peoples"; And again: "From the east even to the west, the name of the Lord is praised. The Lord is high above all nations; his glory is above the heavens"; “God, according to your name, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth”; "Hear us, O God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of those far off upon the sea." and: "That we may know your way on earth, and your salvation among all nations"; and: "Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all judges of the earth, young men and maidens, old men with the young—let them praise the name of the Lord";✦ And Isaiah's: "Listen to me, my people, says the Lord, and you kings, hear me, for a law will go forth from me, and my judgment will be a light to the nations; my righteousness is drawing near quickly, and my salvation will go forth like a light; the islands wait for me, and the nations put their hope in my arm."

И не иудеискы хулимъ, нъ христианьскы благословимъ;

не совѣта творим, яко распяти, нъ яко Распятому поклонитися;

не распинаемь Спаса, нъ рукы к нему въздѣваемь;

не прободаемь ребръ, нъ от них пиемь источьникъ нетлѣниа;

не тридесяти сребра възимаемь на немь, нъ «другъ друга и весь животъ нашь» тому прѣдаемь;

не таимъ въскресениа, нъ въ всѣх домех своих зовемь: «Христос въскресе изъ мертвыих»;

не глаголемь, яко украденъ бысть, но яко възнесеся, идеже и бѣ;

И другое: «Живу азъ, глаголеть Господь, яко мнѣ поклонится всяко колѣно, и всякъ языкъ исповѣсться Богу»;

и Исаино: «Всяка дебрь исполнится и всяка гора и холмъ съмѣрится, и будуть криваа въ праваа, и острии въ пути гладъкы, и явится слава Господня, и всяка плоть узрить спасение Бога нашего»;

и Данииле: «Вси людие, племена и языци тому поработають»;

и Давыдъ: «Да исповѣдатся тобѣ людие, Боже, да исповѣдатся тобѣ людие вси! Да възвеселятся и възрадуются языци!» ;

и: «Вси языци въсплещѣте руками и въскликнѣте Богу гласомъ радости, яко Господь вышнии страшенъ, царь великъ по всеи земли»;

и по малѣ: «Поите Богу нашему, поите; поите цареви нашему, поите, яко царь всеи земли Богъ, поите разумно. Въцарися Богъ надъ языкы»;

и: «Вся земля да поклонить ти ся и поеть тобѣ, да поеть же имени твоему, Вышнии»;

и: «Хвалите Господа вси языци, и похвалите вси людие»;

и еще: «От въстокъ и до западъ хвално имя Господне. Высокъ надъ всѣми языкы Господь, надъ небесы слава его»;

«По имени твоему, Боже, тако и хвала твоа на коньцих земля»;

«Услыши ны, Боже, Спасителю нашь, упование всѣмъ концемь земли и сущиимъ въ мори далече»;

и: «Да познаемь на земли путь твои и въ всѣхъ языцѣх спасение твое»;

и: «Царие земьстии и вси людие, князи и вси судии земьскыи, юношѣ и дѣвы, старци съ юнотами да хвалять имя Господне»;

Scripture echoes

  1. ↩Matt.26.3-Matt.26.4;John.11.53 — Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the courtyard of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas. Matt.26.4 — and they plotted together that they might seize Jesus by stealth and kill him John.11.53 — So from that day on they plotted to kill him.
  2. ↩1Cor.1.23 — but we proclaim Christ crucified: to Jews a stumbling block, and to Gentiles foolishness,
  3. ↩Ps.141.2;1Tim.2.8 — May my prayer be set before you as incense; the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. 1Tim.2.8 — I desire, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or disputing.
  4. ↩1Cor.15.20 — But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
  5. ↩Isa.52.10 — The LORD has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
  6. ↩Isa.45.23;Rom.14.11 — By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out a word of righteousness, and it shall not return: that to me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. 7. ↩Isa.40.4-Isa.40.5 — Every valley shall be raised up, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Notes

  1. 1 ↩нетлѣниа is the patristic/theological term for incorruption (imperishability of resurrection life), not mere undyingness; kept as 'incorruption' rather than flattened to 'immortality'.
  2. 2 ↩The quoted phrase echoes the Divine Liturgy formula of entrusting ‘one another and our whole life’ to Christ (cf. the fuller ‘ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God’).
  3. 3 ↩The Slavonic keeps plural/corporate forms against the familiar Gospel wording: Thomas says «Господь нашь…» ("our Lord") and the thief «Помяни ны…» ("remember us"), not "my"/"me". Rendered from the source as written.
  4. 4 ↩Source unit is only the citation-closing semicolon that links this David quotation into the surrounding catena of scriptural proofs.
