Chapter 45Revel.8.45

The King's Duty and Divine Promise

The Mother of God warns the king that his military success depends on the spiritual state of his people rather than mere numbers.

The Mother of God spoke to the bride, saying: "If the king goes out against the pagans, let him have a pre-determined number of people, because I know his going out and his coming back, and that many are going who will be no less rebellious toward God than those who went out with Moses." But just as Moses did not lead the people into the promised land because of their ingratitude, so those who are not yet born will carry out the will of God.

The Covenant of Reciprocal Faithfulness

The king is cautioned against presumption, reminded that divine favor is contingent upon his own continued obedience.

The king shouldn't be overconfident just because I called him my son and said I would never want to separate myself from him. For if he keeps his promise to me, I will keep my promise to him; but if he treats me with contempt, he should fear that he will be treated with contempt in return.
