Chapter 21Revel.8.21

Quidam nobilis deridebat de deo coram vno rege et christus comminatur eidem regi, nisi illum corripiat. Quia iudici corripienti peccatorem propter deum duplicabitur corona, dissimulanti vero duplicabitur pena.

The Patience of God

God explains that His patience with the wicked is a deliberate timing, like the ripening of colors for a harvest.

The Son of God says to his bride, "Why are you troubled that I endure with such patience the one who was mocking me?" Don't you realize how terrible it is to burn forever? For when different colors are sown, if they are cut down before the proper time, they aren't as effective for coloring as they are when they are gathered at the right time. In the same way, my words—which must be revealed with both justice and mercy—need to grow until they reach full maturity; only then are they truly suited to the situation at hand, and only then will they fittingly color my power.

The Duty of Correction

The king is warned that he must correct those who mock God, as this act of mercy brings a double reward, while silence brings a double penalty.

And so, the king must be careful that his own soul doesn't end up being held accountable for the soul of the one who mocks me. Because whoever corrects a sinner for God’s sake—so that the sinner might not be punished by God, just as Moses did—will have their crown doubled; and because they appease the anger of God, and because they lessen the judgment of the offender, so that they might not be punished eternally. But whoever avoids correcting a sinner will double their own penalty, specifically by increasing that penalty in the future and by failing to exercise justice.
