Chapter 19Revel.8.19

The Language of the Trinity

The Mother of God explains the theological distinction between the 'I' of the Son and the 'we' of the Trinity.

The Mother of God says to the bride, "You wonder why I sometimes say 'we' when I speak to you, and why, when my Son speaks to you, He says 'I'." You should know that this is because when my Son speaks to you, He speaks from the side of His divinity, for the Trinity is one God. But when I speak, I speak by the power of that same Trinity, and the Word of the three Persons is one and the same Word; that's why I say "we."

A Warning to the King

Mary issues a stern warning to a king to remove a corrupt counselor and pursue divine love with greater diligence.

Tell this king, for whom you are now praying, that the Mother of Charity is warning him and protecting him from shame, embarrassment, and his own ruin.1 It would be a source of shame and embarrassment if a master were to put his servant in his own place, and it would be a loss if someone were to trade a chest full of gold for one that was empty or of little value. This king intends to promote a servant of the devil, wanting to obey him—which is, in every way, a spiritual disgrace. Therefore, I swear by Jesus Christ my Son that unless he removes that man from his side—with the advice of wise counselors, reducing him to a simple status according to his birth, and granting him no power or even a single penny from the royal treasury— I will scourge him from the top of his head to the soles of his feet until he says in his pain, "Have mercy on me, Mary, for I have provoked you to anger." Second, I warn him against the harm of focusing so much on a little bit of rest that he ends up in long-term unrest; instead, he should work more diligently and courageously in divine love, so that he may obtain that precious and eternal gold. But if he refuses to obey as my Son told him to, he should let it go, because we have found good ways for him to turn away from what he has started without suffering the world's shame or loss.

Notes

  1. 1The Latin 'incautat' is a rare or non-standard form, likely meaning 'to warn' or 'to make cautious'. 'Precauet' is rendered as 'protecting' or 'taking precautions for'.
