Chapter 87Revel.6.87

The Stench of Spiritual Separation

The bride perceives a supernatural stench upon the arrival of an excommunicated man.

One day, while the bride was sitting with a bishop and other noble people, she suddenly sensed a horrible stench, like the smell of rotting fish scales. While the lords wondered why she alone could smell the stench and they couldn't, a man who had been excommunicated immediately entered the house; because of his power, he didn't care about the bond of excommunication.

The Danger of Excommunication

Christ explains the grave spiritual peril of excommunication to both the individual and those who associate with them.

So, once the conversation had ended, Christ said to his bride: "Just as the rot of fish scales is more dangerous to the body than other stenches, so excommunication is a spiritual sickness more harmful to the soul than others." For it harms not only the person who is excommunicated, but also those who associate and agree with them. That’s why a bishop should work to ensure such people are disciplined, so that others aren't corrupted by participating with them.

Read the original Latin

Ideo episcopus laboret, vt tales puniantur, ne participacione eorum plures maculentur."
