Chapter 80Revel.6.80

The Nature of Demonic Torment

Christ explains to the bride the various hierarchies and types of demonic influence that afflict the human soul and body.

A woman was tormented by a demon, and her belly would suddenly swell up as if she were about to give birth, only to gradually go down again, as if there were nothing in her womb at all. When she had been tormented for a long time by an unclean spirit and her belly kept swelling up as if she were about to give birth, her mistress consulted the bride of Christ about it. As she prayed, Christ said to her: "Just as among the good spirits one is more subtle and superior than another, so too among the evil spirits one is more wicked than another." For in this realm, there are specifically three kinds of demons. The first is fiery and flaming, and it dominates those who are gluttonous and drunk. The second is diabolical, and it takes hold of a person's body and soul. The third is more abominable than the others, for it incites a person to lust against nature itself.

The Path to Deliverance

Christ prescribes the remedy of confession, the Eucharist, and the intercessory prayers of the faithful to heal the afflicted woman.

Because a demon dominates this woman due to her unfaithfulness and lack of self-control, and because she approached the Sacrament of the altar without confessing out of shame, she must confess the sin she has long hidden, and the friends of God must pray for her.1 Afterward, let her receive my Body from the hand of the priest, for it pleases me that she be healed through the prayers and tears shed for her by some of my friends. Once this was done, the woman was healed.

Notes

  1. 1The Latin 'infidelitatem' here likely refers to a lack of faith or trust in God's mercy, rather than a total loss of belief.
