The Divine Apothecary
Christ reveals Himself as the physician who offers the sweet, life-giving drink of the Holy Spirit to those who love Him.
Christ speaks to his bride: "I am like a skilled doctor and apothecary to whom everyone who loves me runs, because they know my drink is sweet." Those who drink the sweetness of my cup, believing it to be life-giving, keep returning to the apothecary's house; but those who feel the sting of the drink flee from me. It’s the same with this spiritual drink, which is the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God is truly sweet to taste; he comes to strengthen every part of you and flows through your heart, so that you might be cheered against temptations. I, God, am that physician and apothecary, ready to give my drink to all who desire it with love.
The Taste of the Spirit
The reception of the Holy Spirit depends on the soul's desire to be cleansed of sin.
The person who is healthy and ready to receive my drink is the one who has no desire to remain in sin, but having tasted my drink, finds constant delight in drinking it. But anyone who intends to stay in sin takes no delight in having the Spirit of God.
