The Pattern of Holy Obedience

The Mother and Son model the perfect surrender of the human will to the divine will.

The Mother seemed to say to her Son, "You are the King of glory, my Son; You are Lord over all lords; You created heaven and earth and everything in them." Therefore, let every desire of Yours be fulfilled; let Your every will be done!" The Son replied, "There is an old proverb: 'What a young person learns in youth, they keep in old age.'" So you, Mother, have learned from your youth to follow my will and to set aside all your own will for my sake. That's why you were right to say: 'Your will be done!' You are like precious gold, stretched and beaten upon a hard anvil, because you were struck by every tribulation and suffered more than anyone else during my passion. For when my heart was breaking on the cross from the intensity of the pain, your heart was pierced by this as if by the sharpest iron, and you would have willingly let it be torn apart, had it been my will. Even so, though you could have resisted my passion and wished for my life, you still wanted nothing except what was in accordance with my will. That is why you said it well: 'Your will be done!'

The Call to the Heavenly Bride

Mary invites the bride to love the Son and honor the radiant splendor of the saints.

Then Mary spoke to the bride: "Bride of my Son, love my Son, because He loves you!" Honor His saints who stand before Him! They are like countless stars, whose light and splendor cannot be compared to any earthly light; for just as the light of the world differs from darkness, so, and even more so, the light of the saints differs from the light of this world. I tell you the truth: if the saints were seen in the brightness they truly possess, no human eye could bear it, and you'd be blinded to all physical light.

Four Pillars of the Spiritual Marriage

Christ instructs the bride on the four essential virtues: detachment, faith, obedience, and humility.

Then the Son of the Virgin spoke to His bride, saying, "My bride, you must possess four things." First, you must be prepared for the wedding of My divinity, which holds no carnal lust, but the sweetest spiritual delight—the kind that befits God to have with a chaste soul—so that neither the love of your children, nor even of your possessions or parents, draws you away from My love. Don't let it happen to you as it did to those foolish virgins who were unprepared when the Lord wanted to call them to the wedding, and were therefore shut out. Second, you must be ready to believe my words. I am the truth, and nothing but truth ever comes from my mouth; no one can find anything in my words but the truth. Sometimes I mean what I say in a spiritual sense, and sometimes it should be understood exactly as the literal words sound; therefore, no one can accuse me of lying. Third, you must be obedient, so that there is no part of you that has sinned for which you do not demand worthy penance and correction. For although I am merciful, I do not abandon justice. Therefore, obey those you are bound to with humility and joy, in such a way that you don't act against obedience, even for things that seem useful and reasonable to you. For it is better to set aside your own will for the sake of obedience—even if that will is good—and follow the will of the one in charge, provided it isn't contrary to the salvation of your soul or otherwise unreasonable. Fourth, you must be humble, because you have been joined in a spiritual marriage. Therefore, you must be humble and modest when your Bridegroom arrives. Your handmaid must be moderate and restrained—that is, your body must be abstinent and well-disciplined. For you will be fruitful with spiritual seed, which will benefit many. Just as a shoot, when grafted onto a dry trunk, causes the trunk to begin to bloom, so you must bear fruit and bloom through my grace; and this will intoxicate you, so that the entire heavenly host may rejoice in the wine of sweetness that I am about to give you.

The Promise of Spiritual Fruitfulness

God promises the bride spiritual joy and fruitfulness, comparing her calling to the life of John the Baptist.

Don't doubt my goodness! I tell you for certain that just as Zechariah and Elizabeth rejoiced inwardly with unspeakable joy at the promise of a future child, so you too will rejoice in my grace, which I intend to show you, and furthermore, others will rejoice through you. An angel spoke to those two, namely Zechariah and Elizabeth, but I—God, the creator of angels, and your God—am speaking to you. They gave birth to my dearest friend John, and through you I want to bring forth many children for myself—not children of the flesh, but of the spirit. I tell you truly, John was like a reed full of sweetness and honey, because nothing unclean ever entered his mouth, and he never took in more of life's necessities than was reasonable. No seminal fluid ever left his body, and for that reason, he can rightly be called an angel and a virgin.

Mater videbatur dicere ad filium: "Tu es rex glorie, fili mi, tu es dominus super omnes dominos, tu creasti celum et terram et omnia, que in eis sunt. Fiat ergo omne desiderium tuum, fiat omnis voluntas tua!"

Respondit filius: "Prouerbium antiquum est, quod 'illud, quod iuuenis discit in iuuentute, hoc retinet in senectute.' Sic tu, mater, a iuuentute didicisti sequi voluntatem meam et relinquere omnem voluntatem tuam pro me. Ideo bene dixisti: 'Fiat voluntas tua!'

Tu enim quasi aurum preciosum, quod extenditur et percutitur super durum incudem, quia tu omnibus tribulacionibus percuciebaris et in passione mea pre ceteris paciebaris, quia, quando cor meum in cruce pre vehemencia doloris rumpebatur, tuum cor ex hoc quasi ferro acutissimo vulnerabatur, et libenter scindi permisisses, si fuisset voluntas mea.

Verumptamen eciam si potuisses restitisse passioni mee et optasse vitam meam, tu tamen noluisti nisi iuxta voluntatem meam. Ideo bene dixisti: 'Fiat voluntas tua!'

Deinde loquebatur Maria ad sponsam: "Sponsa filii mei, dilige filium meum, quia ipse diligit te! Honora sanctos eius, qui astant ei! Ipsi enim sunt quasi stelle innumerabiles, quorum lux et splendor nulli temporali luci comparari potest, quia sicut lux mundi differt a tenebris, sic et multo magis lux sanctorum differt a luce istius mundi.

Vere dico tibi, quod, si sancti viderentur in claritate, sicut sunt, nullus humanus oculus hoc ferre posset sed corporali lumine priuaretur."

Inde loquebatur filius Virginis ad sponsam suam dicens: "Sponsa mea, tu debes habere quatuor. Primo debes esse parata ad nupcias deitatis mee, in quibus nulla est libido carnalis sed spiritualis delectacio suauissima, qualem decet Deum habere cum anima casta, ita ut non filiorum amor tuorum, non eciam bonorum vel parentum, retrahat te ab amore meo. Ne contingat tibi sicut illis virginibus fatuis, que imparate erant, quando Dominus voluit vocare eas ad nupcias, et ideo excludebantur.

Secundo debes esse credula verbis meis. Ego enim sum veritas et de ore meo numquam nisi veritas procedit, nec aliquis potest inuenire in verbis meis nisi veritatem. Quia quandoque spiritualiter intelligo, que loquor, quandoque sicut tunc ipsa littera sonat, et ipsa verba mea tunc nude debent intelligi, et ideo nullus potest me arguere de mendacio.

Tercio debes esse obediens, ut nullum sit membrum, in quo deliquisti, de quo non exigas dignam penitenciam et emendacionem. Quia licet sim misericors, tamen iusticiam non relinquo. Ideo, quibus teneris, obedias humiliter et hilariter, ita ut eciam, quod tibi videtur utile et racionabile, contra obedienciam non facias. Est enim melius propter obedienciam relinquere voluntatem tuam, licet bonam, et sequi voluntatem precipientis, si non est contra salutem anime vel alias irracionabilis.

Quarto debes esse humilis, quia coniugio spirituali copulata es. Ergo debes humilis esse in aduentu sponsi tui et verecunda. Ancilla tua sit moderata et refrenata, idest corpus tuum abstinens et bene disciplinatum. Eris enim fructifera semine spirituali multis profuturo. Sicut enim, surculus si inseritur trunco arido, truncus incipit florere, sic gracia mea fructificare et florere debes, que et inebriabit te, ut ex vino dulcedinis, quod tibi daturus sum, omnis celestis exercitus gaudeat.

Noli diffidere de bonitate mea! Dico tibi pro certo, quod sicut Zacharias et Elizabeth ineffabili gaudio gaudebant interius de promissione prolis future, sic et tu gaudebis de gracia mea, quam tibi facere volo, et insuper et alii gaudebunt per te.

Illis duobus, scilicet Zacharie et Elizabeth, loquebatur unus angelus, ego autem, Deus et creator angelorum et Deus tuus, loquor tecum. Illi duo genuerunt michi amicum meum carissimum Iohannem, et ego per te volo generare michi multos filios, non carnales sed spirituales.

Vere dico tibi, quod ipse Iohannes similis erat arundini plene dulcedinis et mellis, quia in os eius numquam intrauit aliquid immundum nec ultra mensuram perceptibilem suscepit vite necessaria. Nec umquam seminarius humor de corpore eius exiuit et ideo bene potest vocari angelus et virgo."
